Sodium Laureth Sulfate free shampoo

The e-mail has been circulating since at least 1998 SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (properly abbreviated SLES) are commonly used products in tooth pastes and shampoos.
They are only needed in very small amounts, and they have been used for years without any health concerns.
SLES and SLS which are not the same but cited as such by the hoax is without doubt a hoax. However it is worth noting that Sodium lauryl sulfate is well known to be a skin and eye irritant and can cause dermatitis with prolonged contact in high concentrations. .
I took part in medical skin sensitivity testing at my local hospital. SLS defintiely does have an effect on sensitive skin. You do not get an allergic reaction but neverthless it caused definite irritation on skin in direct proportion to the amount used on the test patches. I find that any bath products that contain sls (however they spell it) makes me itch and dries my skin significantly although i appreciate that there may only be a small amount of the chemical in the product.
I wish i could find a range of bath oils etc that does not contain it!!

Have you considered making them yourself? You can buy the ingredients very cheaply and add any essential oil that you like (I love lavendar so use that). At least then you know what has gone into it and it works out so much cheaper.0 -
'Naked' hair products from Boots are SLS free. I love them! Stock up when they're on offer though...0

I know that Weleda shampoos don't contain sodium lauryl sulphate anymore. This is a shame because they used to be the only products that didn't make my hair go frizzy before they changed the formulation.0

My dh suffers most terribly from mouth ulcers I mean really badly if he uses toothpaste with sls in then he is immediately struck with them. Huge great hanging things. I found out about sls and he now uses Sensodyne toothpaste the pink one it's the only one with no sls in at least the only one I have found wothout having to pay an absolute fortune for.hth m'dears good health!
I am assuming he had been to the doctors? I know this can be a sign of other problems.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
any of the supermarket's pure soap bars are great
vegetarian as they don't use tallowate
4 bars for a quid or less
can lather up and use as shampoo
contain no parfum, colourants, sls, sles, als, or PEG- type stuff - just pure soap base!
give your body a break - although the chemicals listed above aren't known to cause cancer, a by product of their manufacture (1,4-dioxane) does, and may be present in very minute quantities in shower gels, shampoos etc that contain them... more evident is that they are themselves irritants... and they may perhaps affect hair growth!0 -
sorry, also don't be confused by sodium coco sulphate - it is chemically identical to sodium lauryl sulphate0

SLS's make my eczema really bad, and I have tried a whole load of shampoos without it and to be honest most of them made my hair with extremely fluffy and static or like rats tails . I couldn't find a bubble bath without them (a fair few shower gels) I dont like oils I always feel like I want another bath afterwards and was just desperate for some bubbles!
For Christmas my Mum bought me some Dr Organics http://www.drorganic.co.uk/ shampoo and conditioner (the pomegranate one) and I was really impressed my hair looks and feels great and I have rencelty bought a few of the other products the tea-tree bath and shower gel is lovely and fresh and does product lots of bubble. Ive also now tried a couple of body lotions and they are quite nice too.
They do contain coconut which normally I am allergic to but for some reason it hasn't effected me (yet!)
Best of all... they don't cost the earth (literally!) the shampoos ect start at around £4.
They also so face creams etc which I think I will be trying when I run out of what I'm using at the mo.
YDSMI wish I would take my own advice!0 -
Don't know how I missed this thread before
I'm allergic to SLS as well in shampoo (nasty danduff if I use it, ugh, and very itchy scalp). I find Aveda shampoo is good, really like the scalp therapy. thanks for all the tips here though!0 -
Finding products without SLS in them is hard but is getting better. The only downside being the price. I read up on this last year when I came across an article saying that whilst food and what goes into meals etc, is governed by governing bodies, make-up and beauty is not so and consequently, manufacturers can more or less put what they like into stuff within reason. I bought 'Gorgeously green' by Sophie Uliano. She is English but lives in the states. She has her own website and if you go to the forums, the people on there, do recommend some SLS alternatives and alternatives for make-up also. It just depends on how far you want to run with it. Burts bees is a good one. Can usually get some of their stuff on offer at TK Maxx but its hit and miss when its in. Good luck.I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.0
