Sodium laurel sulphate can also be found in other items that need to foam or lather, such as toothpaste, bath/shower gels, shaving products and cleaners like washing up liquid.

An e-mail hoax went around years ago claiming it causes cancer. A number of anti-propoganda sites have since sprung up.

Personally I'm not convinced that it is harmful and continue to use products with it in.

OP - have you tried organic ranges or natural beauty shops like Lush?

The fact is though that sodium laurel sulphate has been banned for use in America and many other countries and the fact that it is in toothpaste is the worst i think.
I also buy halo and horns toothpaste which doesn't contain any
    SSL's.
The fact is that these products do not need the ssl's they are just there to create the foam we all feel happier seeing in these products but not having it does not affect the performance at all.

Found this on my little search, thought it may be of interest around the subject matter.

There has been much concern recently concerning SLS. The e-mail has been circulating since at least 1998 SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (properly abbreviated SLES) are commonly used products in tooth pastes and shampoos. They are primarily used for creating a foaming action. They are only needed in very small amounts, and they have been used for years without any health concerns. There are no studies (that are worth the paper they are written on) I can find that link either of these chemicals to cancer. Numerous sites across the Internet have labelled this email letter a hoax.

SLES and SLS which are not the same but cited as such by the hoax is without doubt a hoax. However it is worth noting that Sodium lauryl sulfate is well known to be a skin and eye irritant and can cause dermatitis with prolonged contact in high concentrations. Results of some tests on animal tissues indicate that it's mutagenic - i.e., it may be related to abnormal cell mutations - though the evidence is inconclusive. Even so, scientists familiar with the substance insist it is not dangerous in the concentrations found in personal care products.

This is based as mentioned above on high concentrations the fact remains that to pick one product out the actual amount is between 0.04% and 0.07% not very high (Green Things). The manufacturer mentioned that they use it in their creams as a binding agent, and would prefer not to use it but the cream 'just falls apart' without it.

Is this the latest fashion craze in the UK?

Certified by the Soil Association means nothing, anyway. It's well documented that they aren't exactly..rigorous with their checks.
No not the latest craze at all- see the thread was started 3 years ago, suspect it was resurrected by a spammer.
    Booo!!!
  • Earlier references to 'greenpeople' sent me to study their products, and — guess what — "all shampoos free from sodium lauryl sulphate …" BUT their 'Itch Away Shampoo' contains AMMONIUM lauryl sulphate!!!!! As a former research scientist, I am NOT impressed at such chicanery. And it's £8.80 for a measly 125mls, too!

My dh suffers most terribly from mouth ulcers I mean really badly if he uses toothpaste with sls in then he is immediately struck with them. Huge great hanging things. I found out about sls and he now uses Sensodyne toothpaste the pink one it's the only one with no sls in at least the only one I have found wothout having to pay an absolute fortune for.hth m'dears good health!

  • Whether it is carcinogenic or not, I have found that since I changed to Jason shampoo and conditioner and shower gel and Sensodyne gel toothpaste (from Superdrug), I have soft skin, manageable hair that does not need washing so often and the periodontal disease I have had since my teens is appreciably improved.

    That's good enough for me.

My hairdresser actually warned me about using shampoos with strong detergents in them. He didn't say don't use a shampoo with a detergent (because they all have them), but go for a good quality one that didn't have strong detergent in it.

As I wash my hair everyday, he said the shampoo had left it very thin and full of silicone, and stripped of its natural oils. I've read that various shampoo chemicals can choke the roots of hair focciles (sp), which is why we are left with lifeless hair.

My hairdresser's advice was to get a good quality shampoo and not to wash my hair so much.

On another point, my mother used a cheap supermarket shampoo and it made her scalp smell!

I'm not going down the organic route, but I'm going to try a baby shampoo as I assume that will at least have a smaller amount of various chemicals in it (though even Johnson's Baby Shampoo and Simple hair products contain the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or Sodium Laureth Sulfate).
  • Just adding that I've found a few another brand that doesn't contain SLS or silicone:

    MOP
    http://www.mophair.com/

It's expensive, but seems to get good reviews. I have seen it sold in Boots.

Others which have already been listed are:
    Halo and Horns
    Little Me (Boots)
    Green People
