Friends of ours use a sonic device that they swear by.

It's no good if you have any pets (that you would like to keep), and it will set you back a hefty £94 (for one, and you might need more than one) but my friends say it's effective against all sorts of creepies, and also mice. Must admit, I've never noticed any spiders or spider web at their house.

It does not work on spiders. We have one to stop the mice and rats (we live in a very rural area). Works a treat for these, but all spiders still come in.

We caught one the other week that was so big it would not fit in a pint glass - we had to use a pyrex dish. Now, I don't mind spiders, but this was a bit much.
  • Hi all,

I'm sure there must be some old wives tales about how to banish freakishly large spiders from your house?

I know it's a good sign because it means there's no damp (or something), but I'm seriously in danger of ruining carpet/sofa/clothes/hubby with red wine if I continue to jump every time I see one.

Please share your wisdom to avoid me spilling another drop!

  • The glass and newspaper method. Used to be terrified, but am not frightened of much at the moment, as have tackled 4 huge bodied, thick legged beasties, without flushing them away this week.

    Face your fears, only way.
  • oh, I'm fine about getting rid of them (once I've emptied my wine glass) - I was wondering if there's any way of preventing them from being around in the first place!

    Sorry for not being clear.

We had a mahoosive one in the lounge last night. It fell off the wall and ran when DH tried to get it. He did get it though and we threw it outside.

Don't know if this is true but a friend of mine says that putting conkers in the corners of rooms deters spiders from coming into the house.

Might be worth a try when it is conker season as it wouldn't cost anything.

Kleeneze also do a horse chestnut spray but it is £6.50 for 500ml.

  • I've no idea whether or the conker remedy works... but it IS conker season now, there are plenty falling off the trees in my garden anyway! :)

Tegenaria (posh name for giant spiders!) are the first sign of autumn for me. First one of the season last night, a HUUUGE one and I swear when I spotted him he sat there tapping a foot waiting for me to freak out! I'm more or less used to them now but I draw the line at them in the bedroom - they're likely to get a flying lesson out of the window if they turn up in there!

I try to ignore them too - but making webs in my living room is a no-no! so they get relocated to the garden. its the glass and cardboard way for me too - I cannot bear them and its taken years for me to train myself NOT to scream at the sight of them. I just capture them and shake them out by the hazel tree.
