...... although I have to say again it seems to be an area capacity problem as I never have problems getting my calls through 18866.
OTOH EL, you're probably on a CPS package which gives you free weekend (and evening?) UK 01/02 calls so you never have to use 18866 at the weekend.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I agree it's probably an area problem. We use 18866 during weekdays only and don't have any problems at all but during the evening&weekends we use OneTel.

Reading all the above I am getting very confused. Does anybody know which is the best provider and cheapest at present on an NTL line?

Onetel offer free evening and weekend calls to NTL customers for 99p a month,by supplying them with a phonepal smart box.Use them in conjunction with 1899 at peak rate who now charge NTL customers 3p connection for calls to 01/02 numbers and the call costs 0.5p a minute. If you make lots of mobiles calls also consider 18185.

I dunno if the phone has been engaged 'constantly' now I come to think about it. I may well have just called at busy times (eves and weekends?). I'll pay more attention with future calls but for now I have signed up with Just Dial so I can call eve and weekend and get through. Have to say am a bit confused by all this at the mo. I may be experiencing money saving burnout!

As suggested Onetel is on offer to you with an NTL line. If you decide to go down the Onetel route please have a read at this previous post of mine here
which helps MSE in a small way icon7.gif
  • Congestion likely to get worst unless they do something about it.Both 18866,and 1899 get a nice plug in todays Sunday Telegraph Money and Jobs section.

I don't think they've got the money to solve the congestion problems as they really can't make much (if any) money from only 3p per call regardless of length to a geographical numbers. I suspect though if they do get bigger and more popular then they would have to invest in solving the congestion problems.

Are you trying to negotiate for evening & weekend by any chance?

I have looked at Onetel but the offer is only for new customers. A few years ago I took out an account with Onetel, and I have hardly been using them. So I don't know what next as I am very upset with 1899 discriminating against NTL customers.
