Most people on MSE have a CPS provider as well - one which gives at least free weekend calls to UK 01/02 numbers - and only use 1899 or whatever during the week.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Made 2 or 3 calls with 18185 and got busy. However immediate redial and worked fine.

Could you please tell me what a CPS provider is?
All we're trying to do is phone my husband's mum in Canada!

I'm starting to have that problem with 18866 at weekends. It is so popular now it gets busy. I save my free mobile calls for the weekend if possible.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

CPS = Carrier PreSelect. If you've a BT landline, you ensure you're on BT Together Option 1 and pay the £10.50 per month line rental by DD (quarterly).
Then you sign up with a CPS provider which will give yhou (at least) free calls at the weekend (there are two# at the moment offering free evening and weekend calls to UK 01/02 numbers) and your calls then automatically go out via them instead of BT.
Then, you sign up for 1899* and use the 1899 prefix for your UK 01/02 calls during the day during the week so you only pay 3p connection and 0p/minute.
* 1899 is similar to 18185 (which you will be using for your calls to Canada) but they charge 3p connection and 1p/minute to Canada.

BTW, 18185 is cheapest for calls from BT landlines to UK mobiles too (4p connection and 5p/minute during the week and 2p/minute at weekends).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
