Potentially good advice with regards Housing Benefit. A couple of months ago, my local HB dept made a major !!!!-up with a payment to me. In short I'd already been waiting for a payment for 2 months (they messed up) and then paid me a huge amount as promised on the Monday. It was showing in my bank account as being there over the weekend.

On the Monday, the internet showed it had been paid in. Good! BUT also showed it had been withdrawn. BAD! They had requested it back by accident. My standing orders and DD's were all due to be paid out 2 days later. No time to cancel. Lots of bank charges looming!

They were obviously very embarrassed after having made so many mistakes so were willing to bend over backwards to help.

    Relevant bit.

So they issued me a cheque with they inserted in a special envelope which I was stamped and was not to be opened until I got to there bank (Barclays in this case). They weren't quite sure what was going on, and had to make a phone call to HB. But result. I did get paid just in time.

So obviously in exceptional circumstances they can make exceptions to the rule. Only thing is, they might only do this if they are at major fault themselves.
  • A few people mentioning BR friendly banks. And a few misconceptions re basic accounts.

    Currently the situation is.

Barclays - Only completely friendly account.

Coop - Friendly but seems to be turning against applicants who owe them money.

    Previously the above plus;

Nationwide - My choice, but recently appear to have completly turned against bankrupts.

Citibank - Briefly, possibly through error, seemed to be an option, but not now for some time.

Contrary to some suggestion. Clydesdale/Yorkshire have never been BR friendly. Although an excellent bank and account, it's only available to the discharged.
  • Anne is right. I have noticed myself that times seem even less rosy for the newly bankrupt. I really do feel for todays "recruits" if I may put it that way.

I was lucky. I had 3 choices, and even found that worrying. I can feel for those of today.
  • try the ABBEY i did it was probably the only bank i never owed money 2!! they were nice as pie and i got my account number there and then! the OR said he is happy me having that account as i never owed them money (its just a basic account ) with a cash card only mind

    i hope this helps

    good morning all..:D
happy to report am feeling much brighter today.
thanks so much for all your support and words of wisdom yesterday, it was a rough day, so thankful that i found this site as it is really helping me get through all this.:T

my app to barclays is on its way and i am clinging tightly to the hope that it will go smoothely, although i do/did owe them rather a lot of money so am bit anxious that like the coop, they will also turn me down.
in the meantime i have a pin number for my paypal prepaid visa so hopefully card will arive shortly so that is at least one thing sorted out.
landlord has said i can pay him cash (rather than usual standing order) for one month only at no charge so that is excellent news. now i just have to be able to cash the h/b cheques and hopefully barclays will be in place for next month.
i will speak to h/b again on monday, i think they need to put an official stamp on the cheque and then the coop will cash it for me. i don't know how simple this will be or if they will keep on doing it or only once.

so , it seems i shall go on to fight another br day.......

    morning merry,
yes, back on the planet today, was slippin off the edge yesterday...

landlord was reasonable. but if anyone dropping by this thread today knows... i am wondering what will happen when landlord finds out i am br -as OR is going to write to them.... can't see anything about it in my contract but still bit worried - wondering if i should tell landlord myself first - but would rather bury head in sand on that one........

happy saturday all, got to tear myself away from this place for a bit, back tonight i'm sure..x

oh, another question should anyone fancy thinking about it - when i have a bank a/c in place and paypal a/c is operational, i was thinking of selling some stuff on ebay again - not to a huge value, just a few things up to a few hundred quid max total i guess...
do you think this is unwise? Or said cos i am on benefits i won't have to repay anything but that if i got a job i should tell them, but a few hundred quid on ebay..... ??

If you are eally worried about your landlord write him a letter outlining what a good tennant you are. Always pay on time, keep property nicely and now you are bankrupt you have no debts so will never have to prioritise your money any where else. Why would he want to risk an empty property and no income while he looks for anther tennent who might not be such a good tennent.

If its just a few hundred I wouldn't bother telling OR. It isn't income so there's no need.
