candygirl ahhh so pleased the party went well for you all and Mum and Dad enjoyed it :) But I must say I think your SIL is very selfish , expecting them to look after the children, while she goes off and enjoys herself.

  • Since we started to be more careful with money and not eat out as much - wow doesnt eating out take your money!
We like most people like good food - and after a hard day dinner is a welcome relaxation. We used to buy all sorts of conveinience foods. It seemed easier. And M&S is a Dangerous. place to visit.
So we have started to make humous - and experiment with it- its so cheap and easy to make. Last week we made Gravlax a bit like smoked salmon but tastier and much cheaper it keeps for ages..This week we are going to buy a load of old tomatoes and roast them, makes a fab sauce. I´m sure there are more ideas !
I refuse to eat rubbish.... and hate - budget packaged foods from supermarkets.

    :rotfl:

That's great -well done :T I'll add this to the Old Style Daily Thread where we talk about the ups and downs of our Old Style Days.

I totally agree with you! There is so much cheap and easy food you can make at home that costs a fraction of a takeaway or a ready meal, is far more nutritious and is less likely to give you food poisoning! My OH still liked his little takeaway treats up until two weeks ago when he got seriously ill from it. I hammered that one home by getting him to watch that Rogue whatever-it-was last night.

My favourite eat-in takeaway recipe is sticky lemon-pepper noodles. It's not the cheapest in the world but it's not expensive and its scrummy:

Mix 5tbsp honey, the zest and juice of a lemon, 3 cloves chopped garlic, 2tbsp grainy mustard and 2tsp black pepper to make a marinade for some chopped up chicken, prawns, meat, veg... whatever you're into. Bung it all in together the night before if you're organised and two minutes before if you're not.
Fry in a pan, drizzling the marinade over gradually. Meanwhile cook some noodles, pasta or rice (depending on what's around) with some frozen peas in the same water. Mix everything together and add some chopped spring onions if you've got some kicking about. Serve with salad. Takes about 10 minutes start to finish, even allowing for making the marinade.

What are other peoples' favourites? I could do with extending my repertoire!
  • Actually I think it's one of those things you only ever learn the hard way, because whether you get affected by it in the relatively low dose in runner beans or not is hereditary. So some people will eat and eat them and never get a reaction (like me :D) and some people can be violently ill after eating as few as three or four beans. The chemical is prussic acid, the same chemical compound as you get in dried beans, except they have it in much higher concentrations, enough to affect most people, which is why you have to boil them properly. Wow, I know something clever! Anyway, it can lower your blood pressure and cause vomiting and diahhorea(sp) but as far as I know it is never fatal unless there is another underlying condition. So I'm glad you're okay, and at least you know to avoid raw beans in future :p

Is that right :confused:Prussic acid is a gas, which causes breathing difficulties, rather than gastric problems. I think I'm going to carry on eating raw beans ;)

THIS article from google has a bit more info on the bean debate.

I started off by thinking it only related to 'raw' as in dried/rehydrated but not cooked. Having read through, I'm not so sure.

Yes, it's prussic acid... you get it in almonds and peach stones too. It's also called hydrocyanic acid or hydrogen cyanide. We all know it's more infamous use as a gas, but in these quantities ingested its no more than an irritant.

Edited to add; just emailed my mum who used to be a food scientist before she had a stroke (in the 'scientist' sense rather than the home ec one) and she said they contain lectins which your body turns into prussic acid.

Ooh that's a relief. If 50% of the beans make it to the steamer, that's good going in our house:o

A very late Happy Birthday Donny-gal:bdaycake:

I'm off to Devon tomorrow, now delayed until lateish . Will be back at the end of the week. We seem to be doing lots of short breaks this year. DS2 phoned to say they arrived at their holiday cottage safely. Two hours later he phoned to say DGS1 had been running around too much, had crashed into a door frame, and they were sitting in A&E:rolleyes: They've since phoned to say he's fine. Two stitches, big bruises, and a sore head, but he'll live:D I remember living in A&E when mine were small;)

(((hugs))) to all in need, especially anniestar and mark, smokybabe, candygirl and family.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
