Since we started to be more careful with money and not eat out as much - wow doesnt eating out take your money!
We like most people like good food - and after a hard day dinner is a welcome relaxation. We used to buy all sorts of conveinience foods. It seemed easier. And M&S is a Dangerous. place to visit.
So we have started to make humous - and experiment with it- its so cheap and easy to make. Last week we made Gravlax a bit like smoked salmon but tastier and much cheaper it keeps for ages..This week we are going to buy a load of old tomatoes and roast them, makes a fab sauce. I´m sure there are more ideas !
I refuse to eat rubbish.... and hate - budget packaged foods from supermarkets.

And it's absolutely gorgeous out there too. MrsMix, no I didn't see the news (don't know why), but I'm not surprised... The council just don't wanna listen..... Serves them right. It is busier out on the roads today, but doesn't seem to be anything like as bad as it usually is either.
Candygirl, I'm glad it was a lovely anniversary evening for your parents, if very bittersweet. But I'm sure in some ways it was all the more meaningful? I think I'd have been in pieces... And what is your SIL on????? Has she no consideration?????? grrrrr
W-sybil, I don't think any of us know half the time what to write, I just ramble on..... your posts about your little bear are always very descriptive. I don't know why but I picture you (and please don't get offended!!!!!) as similar to the pictures of the 1930's(?) housewives that were on the thread a couple of days ago
Dazi, thank heavens you're not mortally offended....lol!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kathy, I think we all take broadband for granted now - I remember having dial-up & having to wait a few MINUTES for a page sometimes - now just those few seconds seems too long...
That's the $64, 000 question;)
Just got back from helping out with the tweenies and Dad.It needed 2 of us there to cope, and she's even made my bro's tea so he doesn't have to when he gets back from work [STRIKE]REMIND ME WHAT CENTURY WE'RE IN;) [/STRIKE]    OOOH I am biting my tongue, for now anyway;)
Im going to a friends to watch Mamma Mia later, and to have an Indian takeaway and a few drinky poos:D

Evening folks,
Made a vat ( well, 4 litres) of debris soup this afternoon, seemed to chop forever...don't like putting processor chopped stuff into soup...so that is there for late comers to-night....the Amsterdam and London contingents don't arrive until about 11 and DD1 will probably be here around 8 or 9. Made some bread rolls which should be nice with soup, so that's them fed if they need feeding.
Dull and windy here to-day but no rain(yet), did very little outside, two loads of washing OH took in dry and hung out wet, not sure when it will dry.
Fish, peas and oven chips for dinner, easy meal.
Hope that the Annistars are well to-day, hugs to all in need or want

Floss....the tennis ball trick does work....I also find that a large capacity dryer works best. (another shameless bit of self promotion)
WAT - You will have to PM me the location of said large capacity TD....
Ok folks....I give up. I can't remember who is who on Facebook, apart from DonnyGal who so sensibly uses the same logon....so either PM me your "real names" or message me on FB so I can try & make sense of you all!
Life was so much simpler back in the good old days of face-to-face socialising :rolleyes:0 -
Evening all!
I'm afraid I'm struggling lately to keep up with the thread during the week, so apologies for missing things. I do want to give Kaat lady and Archie a hug, and say Happy Birthday to Donny-Gal.
I've done barely anything this evening or yesterday (the exception being hoovering earlier as the floor was a disgrace), but I do have a good excuse. I was sick yesterday evening and spent all evening on the sofa, started to feel slightly better at about 9, still felt not quite right today. After wondering what had caused it (I didn't have a temperature so couldn't be a bug) I discovered that you can't eat runner beans raw (or green beans for that matter)....:o So my lovely pasta salad with lots of crunchy raw veg wasn't that healthy after all!:rotfl:You probably all know not to eat raw runner beans so please don't reply saying so or I'll feel very silly:D
Couldn't be bothered to cook tea and thought OH would be the same so was very naughty and had supermarket pizza for tea. I'll try to redeem myself for pudding, having hm yoghurt (yum) with some nice fruit, I have a choice of passion fruit, raspberries (both reduced), strawberries, mango (both on offer) or stewed apple (very yum - might just eat that on its own!).
Enjoy your evening everyone.

Well, if you are afte homecooking recipes you will find loads on this forum. Also look at the top of this page for indexed collections, there are loads and loads of recipes on there.
I can honestly say i am nearly always dissapointed now when i go out for a meal as the meals seem so tasteless now we are used to good o/s meals...and we save a fortune!
Anyway, goodluck with your home cooking.0 -
Like Kippers I'm usually underwhelmed by restaurant meals.
I made some hummus for lunch today. Top tip for extra money-saving is to soak and cook a whole packet of chickpeas at once. Dried pulses are cheaper than tins (although even tins aren't that pricy). Freeze the cooked chickpeas in a bag. When they are solid give the bag a whack to loosen them all, then you can use as much as you want. They don't take long to defrost, or you can add straight to hot stews or curries.
Don't forget to check out your library for good cookbooks.
I recommend anything by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. I've been meaning to try his 'Gravad Max' which is a budget rversion of gravad lax using mackerel in place of salmon.
The Pauper's Cookbook by Jocasta Innes is an excellent collection of cheap but special recipes.
Also worth a read are Rose Prince's books The New English Kitchen and The New EnglishTable. She has brilliant ideas for using up leftovers deliciously and getting the most out of more expensive ingredients.
My latest favourite is Elisabeth Luard's European Peasant Cookery.
All of these books champion the use of seasonal, locally produced food which makes sense economically and environmentally.
Good luck with your future homecooking you won't regret it;)0 -
I really like Nigel Slater's recipes (The Kitchen Diaries is a lovely book), and Jamie Oliver too. I know he can be a bit irritating on the telly, but his recipes always seem to work, and taste great.0
