    Evening all!

I've done barely anything this evening or yesterday (the exception being hoovering earlier as the floor was a disgrace), but I do have a good excuse. I was sick yesterday evening and spent all evening on the sofa, started to feel slightly better at about 9, still felt not quite right today. After wondering what had caused it (I didn't have a temperature so couldn't be a bug) I discovered that you can't eat runner beans raw (or green beans for that matter)....:o So my lovely pasta salad with lots of crunchy raw veg wasn't that healthy after all!:rotfl:You probably all know not to eat raw runner beans so please don't reply saying so or I'll feel very silly:D

I eat raw runner and french beans at any opportunity and have never been ill!! (In fact ate loads this morning at my sister's allotment!!)

    I didn't know you shouldn't eat them:confused:

    PO xx

Edit to say I love raw potato too!:D

WAT - You will have to PM me the location of said large capacity TD....

Ok folks....I give up. I can't remember who is who on Facebook, apart from DonnyGal who so sensibly uses the same logon....so either PM me your "real names" or message me on FB so I can try & make sense of you all! :o
Life was so much simpler back in the good old days of face-to-face socialising

LOL - perhaps a lovely board guide can put a sticky on like the getting to know you thread where we could put our real names and facebook names.
The clue is floss2 - if you don't actually recognise one of your new friends it's probalby one of us :D I must say I am having to have a lot of help from dd(23). i did try to have a similar name - stefejb = stef bridges. i always have to use almost my own name in forums and things otherwise I forget who i am let alone anyone else.

the curtains were so filthy that the water was black - i've put them on again on a really hot wash - shame shame. i've just noticed also that I've missed out the second tab when i was hanging the other ones - it will have to stay - i almost killed myself climbing onto the back of the sofa to put them on. i'll get a broom handle and try to flick it over to the other side so it won't notice as much.

Gena - I didn't know you couldn't eat green beans raw either - i've never wanted to mind you - hope you feel better soon
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

On Facebook, under your profile photo it says 'write something about yourself' If you put your MSE name in there it will show it under your photo.

Can't take the credit, copied it from Harduphester

:DMy OH calls me a freak when I eat raw potato! It comes from being little and always being allowed a raw chip when my mum was chopping them up!
As for the beans - i googled it, they contain Lectin (or somthing like that - could have remembered it wrong) - some type of toxin i think, it's destroyed upon cooking. Mind you if you've never had a problem I guess you're OK!!:D

Edit to say i've discovered that I love raw sweetcorn (not keen on the frozen or tinned but like corn-on-the-cob) - i had that in my salad yesterday too so googled it just in case - seems top be safe!

Actually I think it's one of those things you only ever learn the hard way, because whether you get affected by it in the relatively low dose in runner beans or not is hereditary. So some people will eat and eat them and never get a reaction (like me :D) and some people can be violently ill after eating as few as three or four beans. The chemical is prussic acid, the same chemical compound as you get in dried beans, except they have it in much higher concentrations, enough to affect most people, which is why you have to boil them properly. Wow, I know something clever! Anyway, it can lower your blood pressure and cause vomiting and diahhorea(sp) but as far as I know it is never fatal unless there is another underlying condition. So I'm glad you're okay, and at least you know to avoid raw beans in future :p

Sybil, I always wondered where your name came from. Now I know ;)

I have been putting the finishing touches to the winter emergency boxes today. The house one (for power cuts) has; a camping stove and gas, candles and holders, matches, a wind-up torch with built-in phone charger, and a radio (battery powered but spare batteries in them.)
The car one has: a camping stove and gas, a wind-up torch, a radio (so you don't have to leave the car running and get carbon monoxide poisoning), warm blankets, a wind-up phone charger, a shovel, and a thermos that will be filled with something hot and nourishing for long journeys. Also the first-aid kit, spare tyre, warning triangle, reflective vests and all the other safety stuff that's always in the car anyway.
Anyone think what else we need?

Silvercharming- that's really interesting, I'd read about dried beans, didn't realise there was such a difference between those and green/runners. Thanks for the info!
