OK I did the basic create traveller install on the usb stick, then created a volume as a file. Initially Truecrypt was auto starting on inserting the usb stick, now it does not, need starting manually from within the stick. Then I find the file by its name within the usb drive and mount it, enter pw and an additional drive apears in Windows which is my encrypted virtual disk.

Not bad but rather too techy for the missus to use. For her I imagined:

    1. Plug in the usb stick
    2. Enter pw into the one and only prompt box
    3. Now can see the virtual drive whose contents will always be encrypted.

Still, for me a useful free enhancement to the usb stick, it wil feel much safer losing it this way!

(Edit) Just had a look at lockngo - there is absolutely no demo to show how easy it is or is not to use once set up, just screen prints on how to lock your drive.

Heeding the dire warnings about inexperienced uses should be using a file based volume not a drive volume, I used the file option, This seems to save having to create 2 volumes on 1 USB drive (with no obvious instructions on how this should be done).

In this beginner mode however, I cannot see a way to have the disk auto mount.

Yay! Have re-run the traveller set-up as per the above suggestion, works well, now there are almost no options, just enter pw and the correct virtual disk opens up. I believe the missus could use this once set up. Cheers!

(only catch might be, it is hard to remember to dismount the volume after use...)

Update: on some computers it autoruns, on some I have to right-click the Truecrypt drive and select "autorun" and on yet another the right-click autorun option is not there.

It would be nice if I could have a *.bat file to click on to get the effect of autorun on my drive....

Meanwhile the trick is to drag the INF file onto the Truecrypt icon, this has the same effect of finding the right file immediately, next step is to just click "Mount Drive" and enter the pw.

    Saw this the other day:
    http://lifehacker.com/5044260/rohos-mini-drive-encrypts-your-usb-drive-files
But it has a partition size of 1GB

The Rohos mini drive software linked above looks the ticket, if free and if you don't mind a limit of 1GB for the encrypted partition (can use the rest of your usb stick capacity for non-secret data like program downloads or music). It does look simpler than Truecrypt to install and operate, as 10past6 would like.

Truecrypt is very good and not that hard, I know because I understand it, and if I can anyone can, just apply a little time. Here is a good tutorial that lays it all out.

Only if the person reading it understands it, sadly I'm at an age where computers are way above my head, pity there is no forum around the net for us older ones to ask questions what may appear to others stupid :o:o

    Thanks for your reply tho.

Ta, I'll have a look at that tutorial tomorrow, whether I'll be able to make head or tail of it tho, I'm not sure.
