Its easy just drag files into winzip and then select encrypt and opt for more secure 128bit winzip has a tutorial

It may be better to select the files to be self extracting too if you use another persons pc

I've got a Crucial Gizmo! Overdrive 4GB, and there's a free Portable Vault tool you can download from them that does something like this. The drive cost me about 30 quid.
  • The best and easiest tool has to be Toucan (Free and Open Source) which can encrypt and decrypt files fast and easily. The application is part of the PortableApps Suite and works on any USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive etc.! You can encrypt/decrypt any file which contains sensitive information as and when you need to. The good thing is nothing needs to be installed so you won't need administrator access to the local PC.

The PortableApps software allows you to use great open source software such as Firefox, Keepass and 7-Zip to name but a few all within a great easy to use interface. Highly recommended and 100% - No Spyware, No Ad-ware or Viruses as verified by Softpedia

    Hope this helps.

Good if you only need to encrypt a few files, but it's an on-demand thing whereas truecrypt is an on-the-fly thing, and will encrypt all the files in the container.

The security software I have seen so far looks sooo complicate to use. What I need is:

    1. Plug in the usb stick.
    2. Windows display a dummy folder for the stick
    3. Click on it and am asked for password
    4. Can now treat the stick as just another drive for all file browsing and copying purposes UNTIL
    5. The stick is removed.
    6. Then revert back to Step 1.

Needless to say, behind the scenes the whole stick contents are encrypted, only you don't notice it once 'logged in' to the stick.

    Any takers?

Hmm, I could try it... though reading this kind of thread on another forum http://dailycupoftech.com/creating-a-basic-truecrypt-volume (see the posts near the bottom mentioning Traveller mode) is exactly the sort of thing that puts me off.
