I read Martin's article about getting hire car excess insurance however is this required in America? I was told on the phone that it is not required as the law states there is no excess and a huge level of cover for everyone...any help would be appreciated

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

I have AVIS car hire booked in the US as part of a British Airways package and I wonder if anyone can please advise whether I'll need any additional insurance in relation to the car?

These are included:
Crf Surcharge$/
Dy Customer Fac Charge
Transportation Fee
Veh. License Fee
Fuel Policy Is Full To Full
Domestic Security Fee
Third Party Liability (TPL)
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Unlimited Mileage

Hi I was using various websites (eg mse recommended skyscanner) to compare prices for 14days car hire at Malaga airport 3rd week in September.

With better known companies its typically £10/day …. But lots of smaller companies (eg goldcars) are quoting about £11 for the whole 2 weeks!

Looking at their t&cs… the hire firms claim
Pick-Up Location: In Terminal
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage: Limited (but enough for my needs)
Included for Free: Collision Damage Waiver, Theft Protection, Third Party Liability, Cancellation, Amendments…

But its too cheap … its got to be a con hasn’t it?

I normaly get 3rd party excess insurance to guard against overcharging at the pickup desk ... but I’m still tempted to steer well clear…. but has anyone got any feedback on such deals?

no I wasn't particularly referring to goldcar as there were half a dozen companies offering similarly super cheap deals of a few pounds per day ... so I was asking for feedback as to whether these deals are geniuine or just a scam to get you through the door before ramping up the real costs?

But yes - the thread you link to is pretty damning and a good indicator to steer clear of all such deals. Thanks

If you are going to do it, book direct, as opposed to via a broker, in so that you have one clear set of T&Cs.
Take pictures of everything and make sure everything is documented. It will be much harder for them to pull a fast one, if they know if you have pictures and video of existing damage.
In addition, get back a bit early, in so that you can have the car checked and signed off before you leave.
They'll try to fob you off. That'll be what you get for going with that kind of company.

Generally speaking, is this the wisest approach? I’m looking to rent a full size car for 3 weeks from Melbourne Airport in November. Skyscanner is a great accumulator which then passes results onto a selected broker who then contacts a rental company and prices seem to be lower, I assume, because of some referral partnership. Same with booking through an airline carrier that has some air miles type partnership.

I prefer the direct approach personally and if it’s the most prudent approach then I lose on potential discount but I guess that’s the price for simplicity.
