What I would like to know is where can you buy a detached house for under £300k. I live in less desirable Wales (thanks J M Business  ) and a small terrace house costs on a run down Council estate costs £90k , semi's are typically £225k+ with detached over £300k. The housing market though is very slow according to local estate agents. Very few properties on books with plenty of buyers around but they don't like the prices. Sellers not willing to drop so the market is stalling.
Here you can Poppy in the also 'less desirable north east' South Yorks in this case. TH are around £80K semis around £140k and a detached around £230-£280k.

That's a big jump you've got there from TH to semi. I thought the jump here was large enough.

I agree about regional variations however all the ones I've seen do it by county, it doesn't take into account that the towns within that county may very much differ, likewise different areas/villages of the same town may differ.

Indeed not all the south is seeing prices drop (Berkshire for instance is seeing price increases in some areas and demand high). It is a case of Location Location. I believe this is true of some areas of London too.

In many parts of East Anglia (Norfolk/Linconshire for instance) you can buy detatched properties under £200k - but then local salaries are less and the areas remote for finding jobs without an hour or so's travel.

There are terraced houses (tiny fishermen cottages) that ahve gone for over £200k here if they are in the right area. The 90k house is in the worst area, on a rough, run down council estate. Probably the average price for a TH in all parts of the city is (was) £125k.

Yes meanmachine.. there has NEVER been a soft landing.

Booms end in busts... so we have the weight of probability in our favour i.e. those that say that this boom will also end with a bust.

Inflation is on the rise, once it starts goign out of control of the BOE then watch the rates be ratched up quite aggressively.

Even in the supposed hotbed of the South east/south coast you can still buy plenty of detached property under £250k, even well under £200k depending which areas and size you want

Even meanmachine may be tempted at that price. He'll probably knock 15% off the asking price though as you and the estate agents have evidently overvalued it
  • With the number of repossessions and bankruptcies rising faster this year than since records began, holidays and everything else being slapped on the plastic, including the weekly shopping, the stall in high street sales, the death of manufacturing in the UK, £5 per gallon for fuel, that`s right, £5 per gallon for fuel, and crazy though it seems diesel is now dearer than petrol, how does that work, it`s like beer being dearer than spirits! The fact that private individuals were and are releasing equity from their property to bolster their failing businesses, whether as sole traders or as Ltd Co`s I reckon the market is in for a proper kicking. Pop in to your local estate agent, they will be diving at your feet, they havn`t seen another human being since September last year! Go and see, the crazy thing is they just can`t see it coming. If I was in the market (which I am not) I would put in the most ridiculous offers and see what happens, I have seen the same houses for sale since last year. We need to start being realistic about house prices, you can build a 3 bedroom house for less than £30,000 but the plot of land is £100,000! for what? We are heading for a massive correction. Anyway where`s my plastic, I need a holiday!

    Love and kisses, optimistically yours........

The Land Reg, Halifax, Nationwide figures didn't do it for you - but here we have it conclussive proof at last -
" 3 BED DETACHED FOR SALE IN EAST SUSSEX FOR UNDER TWO-HUNDRED & FIFTY QUID".
Doomster you were right all along!!
Boomsters - they can go down as well as up!!

    My guess is -
    down where they're up
    up where they're down
    Scotland - no change

    England the Ashes 3-1
    United the Premiership
    Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea relegated
To-morrow fine, sunny dry in the North
Snow, hail, sleet south of Watford

... But I could be wrong :rotfl:
So let's have a pint instead of worrying!!

Funny enough I interviewed someone for a job last week who was relocating from Essex. They said they had to increase their mortgage to buy a house down here. I was surprised as when my sister moved back to Wales from London 18 years ago her 3 bed London house (£110k) bought a 4 bed semi here (£56k) plus a trading business.
