I officially took my ex-oh's name when we married, but continued to be known by my own name, and he was known as Mr. Splash...
As I'm known by two different first names(it's common where I live!), I get letters with four different combinations of names on... it must drive the postman scatty!I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

surely it must feel like you've been bought and sold??
I think that's, to some extent at least, the point though...It's supposed to be that you've *given yourself* to him, so not so much being bought or sold, but I guess that he takes some ownership over you (hence you being "his" wife). If not the above, then certainly the idea of a wedding is supposed to be transactional...
Anyway, I don't know why, but I don't think I'd marry my GF if she refused to take my name, for whatever reason (probably tradition more than anything) it's quite important to me. I do feel quite bad though...her first name doesn't really "mesh" that well with my last name, so it's a bit of a touchy subject...0 -
I've never changed the name I was born with; so much easier when you get divorced!0

I double-barrelled our surnames for my use only - OH and the kids have his name and I have mine.
I am more than a name. (I tell myself that anyway!!)0 -

its difficult isnt it, we have decided to double barrel. It isnt fair for either of us to lose our names (no kids to complicate things!):money:0

Hi,
as though the first 27 years of my life are suddenly erased by getting married?? quote]
How is this then? You are getting married not having you memory banks wiped!!!
. You are EXACTLY the same person after you sign the marriage register than you were before. It all works out good in the end.If it's not good, it's not the end!0 -
It's really nice to read this thread and to know that i'm not alone in my thoughts. I am getting married in June 09 and I am not going to change my surname. It has been my surname for 30 years after all and I cannot imagine being called anything else. My husband to be was actually fine with this but because of people's comments (mainly family!) on the subject he now feels a bit prickly that I won't be changing my name. It's definitely some sort of male pride thing.
I have pointed out that if he wants to do the whole "traditional" thing, then maybe I should give up my full time job to stay at home to darn socks/bake pies etc, whilst he goes out and earns the money to pay the mortgage, bills etc and he can then take on the responsibility of sorting out all of the paperwork/telephone calls associated with mortages and bills . He didn't seem that keen on this idea.....0
