I got a PM from Pollo, so here it is including my response:

I have written to my MP about this. The short version is that Google seems to be okay with removing photos from Street View with only an email address. The Data Protection Act does not require you to confirm the identity in the case of merely removing a record that is not related to any kind of business relationship.

Besides which the DPA allows you to accept an electronic signature. When I contacted my MP I used such a signature. Merely writing a signature on some paper does not confirm someone's identity - how would you know it was mine and not one I just made up? If I sent you a letter addressed from my neighbour and signed how would you know it wasn't from them?

Hopefully Parliament will ban selling personal data gathered from public lists, but if not I'll move on to the EU level. I think there is a good case to be made under the European Convention on Human Rights, specifically the right to privacy.

You don't own my data, I do. You do not have my permission to use it, now or ever.

Yes a signature is often nothing more than a squiggle on a piece of paper and could just have easily been written by a 4 year child or an ape ..... there is no way anyone could verify this was or was not written by you. Absurd in this day and age.. A thumb or finger print however is a whole different case.

I have just come across this thread, and I am pretty pi**ed off about 192.com and the government, who ultimately allow a company to publish personal details on the net without people's consent.
How many people are actually aware that this is happening, and what would the reaction of the majority be?

I think a lot of people on this thread are massively over-reacting.
You would be truly shocked at what information is available on the web, the ER and other less scrupulous areas.

But I guess it is easy to vent at 192.com.

If you like it fill in the form and be done with it.
Next time read the form as well ;)

• After reading an interesting article somewhere about Debt Collection Agencies and similar organisations tracking people down via Social Networking Sites, I decided to Google my name to see what is publicly available. I was a bit surprised to see mine and my Ex-Partners details on 192.com, along with my home address and the date I moved to the property etc. - especially as I always tick the box when I get my electoral registration form. However I downloaded the form and faxed the number provided to have my details removed. No problem! Then I went on Facebook and set my profile to private so it does not come up in searches and I did the same with my LinkedIn profile. All done - or so I thought! I did another Google search and it came up with a site called “Intelligent Tracing” which held my FULL name and address , -other than the door number -but as my post code only relates to a small number of houses it is not hard to track me down! So I e-mailed them asking for my details to be removed from their site with immediate effect as I have been harassed in the past and I live on my own with a small child which makes me vulnerable, as anyone can just look me up and see where I live. I received a courteous reply from a “data controller” within minutes, telling me “You will need to consult and follow record removal via the following link, which explains the process:
Great – I thought… When I clicked on it and read it I realised they are demanding £10 to remove my details! And they want even more personal details which I am reluctant to give out. Plus - they clearly state that they may add them again in the future, making it pretty pointless to pay for their removal in the first place! It states “We purchase Data from multiple sources including comparison websites, free search websites and other commercial organisations. These entries have been included in our people finding database because we have requested and obtained express consent from the person represented to be the data subject."
(NO THEY HAVE NOT!)
"A data subject does have the right to change their mind and to seek a consented data record removal from our database but we equally have a right to seek payment for the administration involved in that process. In the case of free people search registrations, we apply this charge not only because of the administration involved in removing an entry upon our people finding database but also to reflect the data subject had received our service for free in exchange for supplying their personal details.
Failure to provide the record removal fee £10 per person and evidence of both your identity and the personal information record you require to be removed from our database will result in no reply to your communication and certainly no personal record removal from our database. We would advise you to remove your entry from the council electoral roll records (edited electoral roll) otherwise we may collect/purchase the same electoral roll record again and that will involve another record removal application.”

I have no idea who they are and it could well be a scam so I am definitely not sending money as they can just re-add my details. But people be aware – using search websites or comparison websites is risky as they sell on your details to dodgy sites like this!

• I am wanting to remove my details from 192.com and it appears that the details they hold comes before I started using the opt-out option for the electoral register. As the info they hold is for a previous address in my maiden name, when filling out the C01 form I imagine that these are the details I enter?

Makes obvious sense but want to be absolutely sure - thanks!

The details of the people in my household, and also my parents', are available on www.192.com I am uncomfortable with this. Is there any way you can still be registered on the voters roll, but not have your details available to the public? Also, are there any other sites which may have my personal details available to the public?

Make sure you tick to be on the edited electoral register whenever you receive the form to confirm who lives in your house and then the likes of these sites can not have and post access to your details on line.

Edited Electoral Register

When you complete your annual electoral registration form you are given the option to opt out having your personal details included on the edited electoral register. It's important to tick the opt-out box on the form.
How to stop junk mail

Why? Quite simply because there's absolutely no advantage in having your personal details included on the edited register. The list can be bought by any person or company and may be used for any purpose. Junk mailers use the edited register as a cheap and convenient mailing list and people-finding companies such as 192.com use it to sell your personal details. What other people and companies are doing with the data is unknown (as anyone can buy the list and do with it what they like - no questions asked).
The 'full' and 'edited' electoral register

There are two electoral registers. The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote. Only certain people and organisations can have copies of the full register, and they can only use it for specified purposes. These include electoral purposes (which isn't defined and is interpreted liberally), the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you've applied for credit.
The edited register omits the names and addresses of people who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the register. It is this version of the register that is used by bulk mailers to create junk mail lists.

Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
• This company is a bigger threat than 192 as 192 do not publish ex directory numbers and this site does.
192 don't charge you to remove your data, this site does. The company was formed in August 2010 to sell personal data trawled from websites and other sources

I'm opted out from the unlimited electoral register but my 2002 details are still available on 192.com for a fee. It's a problem as I have a rare name. If I was to laboriously print out, fill in and snail mail back to 192.com their C01 opt out form, isn't that just like confirming that the 2002 electoral register details they are holding for me are still current? Why should I have to rely on them removing the details? This makes a mockery of the measures we take for security.

Can't believe this is all perfectly legal. You should have to opt into their site, not opt out. 192.com are careful not to mention the people trying not to be reunited, or united with identity theft, in their blurb about families. Thanks for nothing, 192.com!
agree 100% i'm in the same boat as you i now opt out but my data is still there from 2002, i've only just found out and i'm hoping mad, now i have to mess around opting out to something i never 'opted into ' in the 1st place we have no privacy in this country
• Ok I understand that the government sells the short list (and keeps the full list for the purpose of having a list) and you can update your status of the list (aka to be removed).

But how many websites are there that have these earlier lists?

Is there a final list of websites having these lists?

Maybe one of those admin 192 guys can answer this.
