Hi all, my name is Alex and I am the PR Executive at 192.com.

I saw your posts, and thought I would try to answer your concerns.

192.com does not create new data on anyone, but puts data already in the public domain onto one website. Much of this information comes from the Edited Electoral roll, which you can opt out of when you register to vote.

You can also opt out of having your data on 192.com by filling out a CO1 form found on the site. (I'm not able to post a link).

Finally, 192.com has a proud record of reuniting hundreds of families every year. We are licensed and regulated under the Data Protection Act, and every search made on the site is logged.

Thanks for your interest in the service, any questions please do get in contact via press 'at' 192.com
I am absolutely disgusted to find my details for all to see on 192. My house was robbed by someone who knew what equipment i had at home and when i was away on holiday and was able to find out my address by typing my name into google thanks to 192.com. You say all of the information is already in the public domain. maybe! but people would have to put more effort into finding it than typing your name into google. You make it easy for anyone to get hold of your address. im furious.

I think the answer lies in not filling in the elector register. Or at least in a non de plume.

I will never fill out this again.

F*ck the electoral roll and the government snoops.

I got a PM from Pollo, so here it is including my response:

I have written to my MP about this. The short version is that Google seems to be okay with removing photos from Street View with only an email address. The Data Protection Act does not require you to confirm the identity in the case of merely removing a record that is not related to any kind of business relationship.

Besides which the DPA allows you to accept an electronic signature. When I contacted my MP I used such a signature. Merely writing a signature on some paper does not confirm someone's identity - how would you know it was mine and not one I just made up? If I sent you a letter addressed from my neighbour and signed how would you know it wasn't from them?

Hopefully Parliament will ban selling personal data gathered from public lists, but if not I'll move on to the EU level. I think there is a good case to be made under the European Convention on Human Rights, specifically the right to privacy.

You don't own my data, I do. You do not have my permission to use it, now or ever.

    Mojo,
Google street-view does not display any personal details. If you look on images carefully, they blank out/fade-out people faces, vehicle registration numbers etc.

Re: use of electronic signature, this is merely an arrangement - not an agreement. From a legal point of view, a signature is still required to validate all titles from a legal standpoint (for e.g credit agreements etc). On such occasions, companies will insist for your signature on paper otherwise they simply will not honour the agreement.

Re: selling of personal data, there is a UK legislation that stipulates rules around this. However, the rules and regulations are often interpreted and misinterpreted causing public agony.
As you correctly mentioned, you own your personal data and other parties only have 'your' permission to use your data with your consent for legitmate business purposes.

Really sorry to read your incident described. It is however possible to remove all details from 192.com by submitting the C01 pdf signed and faxing or emailing across to them.

In my view, the problem causing here is the "by default" clause to keep things simple.
The govt do not want to sell your data to commercial interest unless you tell them explicitly that you do not want to.

So if you forget to tell them or miss the opportunity to tell them, your data automatically gets added in the edited register and will appear in websites like 192.com. This issue is always under constant debate and hopefully the policy will become much clearer in the future.

You are legally required to fill up the electoral form.
However, you are not legally required to "opt-in" or "opt-out" from the edited register regarding your data privacy.

People argue that this is a con to protect vested interests of companies like 192.com

Just thought I'd mention Google Maps Streetview because that can show your house in great detail but you can opt out of it. 192 took me off abt 2 weeks after I sent form back. I contacted local council and electoral roll officer said he gets about three queries on this a week. It's pre 2002 data from third parties. There's a huge amount of info on websites like Ancestry too, subscribers can find phone numbers and addresses.
  • I filled in the forms to remove my families information and had an email back saying if it was not remove within so many days I would have to sign up to a google account to take it off

I am fuming I dont want a google account.

Just what do you have to do to get your personal details off

It makes a mockery of being x directory when at the click of a button and paying a small amount all our infor is on there.

What about women who are trying to escape domestic violence

I'd hope that someone like police or social services or council or refuge or charity would be able to contact Google and 192.com to explain why this stuff should be removed on the person's behalf if they weren't co-operative.

I removed our house from StreetView because I was able to zoom unto bedroom and sitting room windows. I didn't have to set up a Google account -there's a teeny link from the page showing your property.

I'd suggest asking local PCSO for advice if 192.com or Google not willing. That doesn't stop people like Ancestry buying up old directories and digitising them. I was able to track my great grandmother zapping across the Atlantic and 90% of the addresses I lived at as a child/teenager.

    Legally required...

It's really about snooping on you and selling off this info to advertisers and junk mailers.
I've had raging argument with the local electoral office about this.. how did my details get on this etc. Never answer the door when you don't sign this f**king form.
