So continuing this thread with regards to who has access to up to date VR information, do the credit reference agencies have access to the full VR or only the edited version?....that is if someone searches for you and you have opted out will you still be shown as living there if you have no current credit agreements?

They have my birth details up apparently, but won't remove it. Some more info here: http://www.arrse.co.uk/intelligence-cell/133150-192-com-government-registrar-details-online.html

Be nice if The Register or someone else could pick up on this story...

Just discovered this 192.com listing and it's an absolute disgrace.

My girlfriend works at a secure mental hospital as a psychotherapist and one thing the hospital takes great care over is to never give the personal details of any member of staff to any patient.

Yet if you search her name on 192.com you can easily find her address and who she lives with.

She never opted in for this and it doesn't seem right that she has to opt out; it should be the other way round. This facility is potentially very risky for anyone, ie police officers, judges, lawyers, doctors, prison guards etc who could be at risk to people with vendettas, who have developed obsessions with certain people etc.

Hi all, my name is Alex and I am the PR Executive at 192.com.

I saw your posts, and thought I would try to answer your concerns.

192.com does not create new data on anyone, but puts data already in the public domain onto one website. Much of this information comes from the Edited Electoral roll, which you can opt out of when you register to vote.

You can also opt out of having your data on 192.com by filling out a CO1 form found on the site. (I'm not able to post a link).

Finally, 192.com has a proud record of reuniting hundreds of families every year. We are licensed and regulated under the Data Protection Act, and every search made on the site is logged.

Thanks for your interest in the service, any questions please do get in contact via press 'at' 192.com

Simple answer - No it doesn't.

Companies like 192.com rely heavily on public registers for displaying content on their website. Three main registers that supply core content generation are electoral rolls, company house director files & Land registry(title plans docs)
It is easy to make information hidden from electoral rolls so that companies like 192.com does not have access to them. Credit rating agencies would still continue to get access to your details even if you opt-out of the edited register. Their access to electoral rolls are allowed by law, but strictly DPA'ed and controlled.

However, if you own a house or are a director of company registered in companieshouse, this must go in the other two registers with your private address and other basic personal details . You cannot opt-out of this at the moment, but I am not sure 192 C01 removes this info.

Also - I think this is probably the reason why people see themselves in by self-googling even if they have opted themselves out from the edited register. 192.com appears to be linking addresses and personal data from various sources they purchase converging to one common point. And of course, search companies(like google) love web-crawling and indexing those common 'converged pages' so they start appearing in search results!

Well, a couple of years ago I went ex-directory, and I have always opted out of the electoral roll thing by checking the box - well since the option started.

However, some years ago I was a director of a company. If I search for my name on 192 that information comes up. It was some years ago and someone looking for me would probably not think to look on the directors register for my details - but 192 makes it public.

Can I require 192 to remove the directors info, and indeed all info they keep on me, from their database?

    Thanks,

    Sue

So, I have a question. If I join clubs online, like from supermarkets, for children, etc. can my information be passed on to other parties and made public online?

    Thanks a lot.
