Timtims, I don't think you get it!! Think about it, and if you still don't get it, then I'm sure someone will explain...

Pinkshoes if you think I don't realise the 6p is so they don't get loads of change you've miss-understood:rolleyes:

I've asked why they find it amusing?

Note Pinkshoes! That is what I asked, not "why do you do that then?"!!!!

There is no explanation! It looks like a joke with no ending. Has she forgotten to write in their reaction she finds amusing? I'm just wondering what the amusing bit is, she doesn't say. The reason I ask is theres a fair chance she's completely missing something. Theres a couple of things I can think of when it comes to getting "the odd 6p" I bet she hasn't thought of.

The OP no doubt finds it amusing because THEY know the 6p will mean less loose change, I know it means less loose change, YOU know it means less loose change, but the local Co op staff will look at you, utterly baffled, about why you want to give them an extra 6p, and what on earth they're supposed to do with it...

Some seem to think it's a tip. Others hold onto it, still type £10.00 into the till, then pick out the change and hand the 6p back to you.

I've had to control the sniggering on many occasions when the staff can't work this one out. It is rather funny :rotfl:

Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I went to the co-op last week - we used to have a fairly decent supermarket type where we lived - some of the promos can be good. Anyway we have moved and they have those Lo-cal co-op things everywhere here. I bought a packet of biscuits, SEL priced at 69p - charged 93p. The women in front of my bought some ice cream, SEL at £3.99 - she was charged £4.99. The SA said 'sorry, it's priced wrong' that was it.

When I worked in retail we was told that is Trading Standards checked prices and found that we had overcharged (say SEL was 49p and we charged 63p) for each item on the shelf it was up to £2000 fine so we checked the prices, if something went through the till wrong then it was refunded and the SEL taken away and either the price changed on the system or the SEL changed if it was out of date.

Now no-one seems to care. From what I have read then it seems the prices shown is an 'invitation to a treat' and that the till can charge you whatever. You pick something up expecting to pay 50p and you get charged £1.50. This is why I did not bother complaining to be honest, as there seems little point. They seem to put a price up and charge whatever they want. It is madness. Especially with people watching the pennies these days.

I always check my receipts though as I used to work in the Electronic pricing side of things and I know how often prices go through incorrectly. Sainsbury, Tesco and Somerfield refund - the co-op can't even be bothered to do that!!

Well if you read my first post more carefully and the post I quoted you'll notice the poster never got as far as explaining that, it's almost as if they lost the ability to type at that point.

However this is what I wanted to point out.............

Or they don't want it because their low on pound coins. Or they've just pick up £7.54 only to have to put it all back down again and start again. Or their worried it will be a quarter of an hour wait until the 6p is located. The utterly baffled looks may well be the look they have whilst their trying to work out how to politely say "no, I don't bloody want it, it doesn't help me it only helps you!".

It is also an uncommon way to pay that someone on their first day may not be familiar with. Only about 1 in 30 transaction will have someone offering extra change mainly women. How about rather than thinking your clever giving them some extra change with no explanation and thinking it's funny they're confused why don't you actually be more clear eg wording it like this "If I give you 6p can you give me "x" back in change".

If the marked price is wrong they have to inform you of the correct price before you pay for it, you can then decide if you want to buy it at the correct price. If they just charge you a higher without informing you they have over charged.

The thing is, if you only notice when you get home - or as in the case of the lady with the ice cream, you do not have enough money on you then you don't get told. I just wish that the price labels were correct in the first place so I knew I was getting to the till, waiting in the queue and then having to say 'no way, I am not paying that'. it is embarrassing and they should not put you in that position. I did not want to have to pay 93p for a packet of small biscuits - I'd have rather had the big packet with 50% extra free for 99p but having waited in the queue for 5 minutes while the other lady had her price checked and the goods removed I could not be bothered. So Co-op got away with overcharging again. I just want the prices to be right when I go to pay. I went up there again at the weekend and someone else had been overcharged. The technology is there for them to have a handheld scanner to go around and check that the prices are correct so why don't they? It is just a pain - I only got up there really if I an desperate for sweets or chocolate, LOL!!

And I would never do a 'big shop' there, it is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too expensive!! They are higher priced as they are 'convenience stores' and open within either walking distance or late at night when the other shops aren't (sunday afternoons for example) so they can charge the higher prices as people are prepared to pay.

Because that will take hours and hours and no company will put it into their budgets to do the entire shop on a frequent basis. They'll probably require 100 a week or something like that.

or simply most people these days haven't got a clue how to do simple maths in thier head.

I am kind of assuming you work for the co-op!! Maybe you can advise them that people are naffed off that they are constantly being overcharged!!

When I worked for a supermarket when we needed to order something we scanned a barcode on the ticket, this came up with the info of the goods..... and this was years ago so the technology IS there if the company wants to invest in it. I worked in a huge supermarket and was EPOS supervisor and I did the ordering and stock check. I was the only one in the ordering department - if it did not get scanned then it did not get ordered. The 2 things go hand in hand, you check the price when you order the goods. Likewise, when the things went through the till if something was coming up at the wrong price you made sure you noted the barcode number and then gave it to the EPOS team to adjust the price on the system. That does not happen in the co-op, in there they just leave it there so someone else gets overcharged.

As I said - we HAD to do it because if we did not then we would have got fined if caught. Of course, people get sloppy if there are no 'rules' and there is no comeback. Hardly the way to run a business in my opinion, drive your customers away because they are sick of being overcharged!!
