I applaud everyone in their efforts in saving loo roll but I'm not sure I could go down the route of using hands and water to clean up after a number two :o

I have this thing about faecal contamination, possibly bordering on OCD, and the thought of doing that (or anyone else doing that) and then using the same hands to prepare food turns my stomach. I know hands can be washed but what if they weren't washed thoroughly enough?

I know I'd definitely wash my hands thoroughly (although I still wouldn't feel comortable with it) but how do I know other people have done the same, especially men? :o

Well, most of the east that does it obeys a very simple rule - you eat and touch food only with your right hand. The left is the one you do the other with. And people are indeed very fastidious with hand washing, mostly due to religion - this includes hand washing before food preparation in addition to hand washing after toileting... oh, and handwashing before praying... in fact, cleanliness in Islam is pretty close to OCD! ;)

Well, using the jug of water and then patting dry the (now )clean area you will have very little risk of contamination, especially if you wash your hands very thoroughly afterwards.

I am an ex-surgical/Theatre nurse, and am pretty obssessive about cleaning my hands.
When I was a student nurse way back when....( Florence was a colleague of mine lol!) ALL WE USED was soap and water, it's the friction that removes the germs from the skin, funny how things change.
Nowadays the manufacturers would have you believe that unless you use their product to cleanse/disinfect everything you will die!!!!!!!!!
I wash my hands before I handle food and if I am baking or "very hands on" with something ( making scones or whatever) I will spritz my hands with my working surface cleanser too.
That said, if you think about it, holding and pouring a jug of water on yer bits & then touching the ( now)clean area with a bit of clean cloth is actually more hygienic than smearing everything around through a thin bit of tissue!!!!!

This reminds me of a tip from my grandmother for avoiding cystitis.......rinse front to back with a jug of water and dry with a flannel. This makes sense on the hygiene and paper saving issues.
Having long been a user of cloth sanitary towels I am amazed I have never thought about the alternatives to loopaper.

I've often considered using cloth & have tried it on many occasion. Unfortunately I have 4 children & could just image them shouting it from the rooftops & being mortifiedly embarrassed by my money saving to the extreme. However as I already use washable sanpro & a mooncup I really can't see a problem with it & good on those of you who already do it. If I can find some nice, cheap discrete tubs to put them in I might Just give it a go as a full time option. Not so sure hubby would be willing to follow my lead but if I don't ask I won't get :)

Thanks for the push. I just found an old moses basket sheet which is fab cotton & will be soft & comfortable to wipe with. Now I just need to find the tubs for it :) think I can get about 30 squares from it.

Not sure the OH would go for this! I use Sainsburys cheap loo roll.. the Double one (can't remembr the name) and it seems to last a while longer than other cheapies. I use a trick that I read on MSE, I squeeze the roll so the paper doesn't come off the roll so easily and have found that it cuts down usage!

I can't begin to imagine persuading older kids - mine are 16, 20 and 21 - that giving up paper is a Good Idea, and expecting them to explain mama's new arrangement to their very many visitors who stay over... who already think my passion for recycling is barmy ("NOBODY else's mum puts rubbish in 8 different bins"...)
