YES! I'm afraid it was newspaper, we had an outside toilet when I was young and that's what we used. Then that hard stuff came in, like tracing paper:eek:

That super absorbant stuff is still available very useful for unwanted guests they should reissue it with various excuses to leave just in case they don't get the hint:

  • Thank you all. This is the best thing I've read for ages, especially the kittens.

Isn't anyone worried about flushing the old towel/flannel down the loo by mistake? I can say with certainty that it would happen in this house. Then there would be blockage.

However, we are flushing money down the loo. You've made me think

Slightly off topic I know but a couple of weeks ago on radio 2 they were talking about the fact that women seem to have this thing about hoarding toilet rolls and when they looked into it after asking a certain amount of women, they found that the majority stored an average of 22 toilet rolls.I checked my basket where I store mine and I must admit I always keep it full and I'm embarrassed to say that I had 35 stashed away.
I bet there's some of you got a lot more than that squirrelled away.

    At least Mrs TM!!

Think I've got 6 x 9 packs under the stairs. Never pay full price for them, always buy them when they're on offer :D

Loving the washable wipes idea so we are going to give that a go partly for money saving and equally because I see loo roll as an environmental problem.

I am definately worried about one of my littlies flushing one by mistake tho - now a blockage wouldn't be very moneysaving

I had the loo/bidet in Egypt too and got used to washing instead of wiping and I must admit, I preferred it. Definately a LOT cleaner.

Might go down the jug and washable wipe route but for wee only!!! Jug and paper for 2s :D

What size are people cutting these cloths into? I don't want to cut a load only to find they are too small

When I travelled in India years ago it was a jug, water and the left hand.

  • Does people wear gloves when showering to wash da bitz or washing babies bottoms? My mums didn't :D

To be honest, I'd try to save money and recycle to save planet wherever I can but for convenience, I pass on this one and use Morrisons' £1.23 for 12.

How about filling up a warm water with an empty washing up liquid bottle as an OS handheld bidet? More control I should imagine.

    For RubyTuesday

When I travelled in India years ago it was a jug, water and the left hand.

It still is a bucket of water, jug and left hand...... or posh places do the same as the middle east, separate shower next to the loo..... much prefer this to loo paper......
    ;) If in doubt, don't! :o

    A rag on a stick?

This is where the term `tow rag` comes from.

On old ships, a stick with rag attached was dropped over the side into the sea and `towed` along. Each man would use it to wipe bum then throw it back to be `sterilised` for next recipent....nice.

People of my age will remember Izal toilet paper which was very stiff and basically just spread it around rather than get rid of it.

Also years ago I worked in a shipping office and they were as tight as two coates of paint and wouldn't buy toilet paper but cut up sheets of `Lloyd's Shipping Movements` (you can see the irony there I hope) for us to use.
