I don't think that people are obligated to read your reviews just because you've read there's and I do still rate people who have not returned rates, as long as they are rating some people at least.
However, I do rate everyone who rates mine.
My interests tend to be quite narrow so to read things that I was only interested in would mean that I didn't read much (I think someone else made this same point- good to see I'm not the only one). I find that dooyoo has opened my eyes to a lot of things that I wouldn't have previously considered, the travel section in particular has been great because there are so many places that I've read about that sound great that I never would have considered visiting before and I would not have searched for those particular reviews.
I do search for things that I am interested in too but they tend to be few and far between.0 -

There's no rule (either official or unofficial) in place to say that people have to "return reads", but it is a train of thought that has become increasingly more popular over the past six months. The more people that will claim publicly that they're intedning to do this, the more that will follow suit and evetually, rating will become a lot more fragmented into little groups. IMO.My interests tend to be quite narrow so to read things that I was only interested in would mean that I didn't read much (I think someone else made this same point- good to see I'm not the only one). I'm not sure I understand this though. Your interests may be limited to, say, books, just as an example. But there's eight years worth of book reviews out there to read and rate.
I certainly believe that a rating on a review/topic that you're personally interested in (as a consumer or if it's within your interests) has more value than reading around "window shopping", just to return reads.0 -
I mean that my interests are far more limited than that.
I love to read but only on certain topics. I have no interest in most types of fiction or most types of non-fiction. I am interested in certain types of romance novel, but even then often only by certain authors. And there are certain types of academic books that I'm interested in but I wouldn't go to dooyoo for that kind of review.
The fact is that often the only person reviewing products that I'm interested in is me.
So by saying that my interests are narrow, I don't mean narrowed down to certain types of products but to certain products.
I don't think that there's any harm in returning rates as long as you rate honestly and I don't think that it's more valuable to rate something that you're itnerested in. It may be more valuable to you as an individual but for the site surely the important thing is that people are rating and that they're doing it honestly, not just giving everyone very usefuls or revenge rating.
I see your point about things becoming quite narrow if you only return people who have rated you. I try to rate as many reviews as possible in addition to return rates but I've found myself getting frustrated when every new review on the front page is 150 words of crap and then just go back to rating the same old people who I know write things that I'm interested in and of a decent quality. I've found the best way for me to find new people to rate is by rating the people who have rated the same reviews that I've rated.0 -
Why not just read a variety of reviews from the new members page then? Read a new member, then an older member etc. I find if I pepper my reading with new and old I find some good new members among the rubbish. It would be a shame if everyone started ignoring new members because they had not been rated by the.
Reading new members reviews has two benefits for me and the site.
1: They are often fresh and escape the trappings of the review templates we all tend to fall into eventually.
2: If they are not fresh, poorly written etc I have the option to rate appropriately so they are better ranked, report them if it is blatant abuse or offer comments and advice if I think they have potential.0 -
I've looked at the review with the one you think has been revenge rating. Have you contacted the other user? I got a NU a few weeks ago and contacted the rater to ask why, and she had clicked the wrong button.
I havent, no. I decided to leave it, I rated one of theirs SU and suddenly got a worse rating from them.
Have decided not to bother, as it is possible thats their true feeling, and either way, it sticks out as a rogue rating currently, and I still get paid (I think :P )
I was just a bit miffed when I saw the rating is all0 -

I do read a variety of reviews but I choose not to do it from the new reviews page. I usually start off on the front page, rate the first review, then click on the person who rated that before me (assuming there is one) and rate one of theirs and so on.
Often I'm the only person who has rated the review so then I go back to the first page and work my way down the list. It's usually at this point that I end up getting fed up of all the new members churning...and some of the older members. It seems to me like there's a lot of people who have been around for a while and their reviews just haven't improved at all.
I prefer to do this because I really don't like putting money in the pockets of people who don't bother rating anyone else. Maybe it's petty on my part.
Today I was doing my usual routine of rating the person who rated the review before me and I went from one review to the next reviewer and found that they had reviewed the same product as the one that I had just rated and I noticed that the reviews were really similar.
How similar does it have to be to be plagarism? I reported it to dooyoo but I'm not sure if it is abuse. One of the lines was exactly the same but the rest was just very similar, pretty much the same points but worded differently.0 -

If you have any doubts report to dooyoo and they can decide. If they are similar it is quite possible they copied. Copying can be subtle or blatant.0 -
it just seemed a bit of a coincidence that that person had just reviewed one review and then written one so similar. I've reported it so i'll see what happens.0

Interesting discussion on rating.
Personally, I endeavour to return rates to most people who rate my reviews. I just see it as a courtesy and good manners. (I have deja vu here, so suspect that I've already written this earlier in the thread!)
I don't have a set system though and I don't return rates to people who, literally, write only gaming reviews, for example, as I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in computer games! I try to vary the topics I write about so that there is always something there for people to read regardless of their interests. Most people have written something that I'm happy to read.
I also read from the new reviews list but have started to avoid new members because their reviews tend to be so poor! When I do come across a new member who writes well I've been adding them to my circle of friends so that I'll be able to find them again, amidst the dross. :rolleyes:0
