  • What I do when I am writing a review is not think about what other people want to know but rather what I would want to know. If you try and write a review for everybody you will never manage it. It is practically impossible. I for example, would rate down a review full of facts that serve no purpose (I really see the point of packaging info and company history) whereas someone else may rate them highly because of this info. Is cmh4135 says it is all subjective. You cannot please all the people all the time so don't kill yourself trying. As we can see from this site people have different things that are important to them when rating and none of them are wrong per say, just different.

I think what makes a review useful depends on what the review is about and whether or not you can rate that review without knowing anything about it also depends on the category.
I mostly review books and in my opinion anyone who reads books can rate a book review as useful or not, regardless of if they read that genre. For a book review to really useful to me I would think that it had to cover the plot and then give opinions. With book reviews I don't think it's just good enough to say this book was good or it wasn't good because tastes differ so widely that the only way to know if you would want to read that book is if the reviewer has given reasons for that opinion.
I could say that a book was excellent, someone could read it and not like it but if I say this book is excellent because it's romantic, there are really hot vampires and it's really easy reading it would give someone a better idea of if they would enjoy that book.
In my opinion pretty much anyone can rate something like this as useful or not useful but you would have to have more specialist knowledge to accurately rate some other things (like toy soldiers).

I like how you say that you need to say WHY things are good/you like them in a review - I totally agree. Be careful, though, with plots as spoilers are a big no no for a lot of folk.

I still don't think you need to be an expert to rate the soldier review, you just have to be interested. Sure, as a non-expert you won't spot the "wrong uniform" issues but as a player, purchaser or observer if the opinion tells you everything YOU need to know then it can still be VU - that's what peer review is about - it's not really about the accuracy (although clearly, a review with glaring errors will be spotted and marked down). We all use things in different ways and all have different purchasing needs. That's why 100% VU ops really shouldn't be happening as much as they are.

I think there's a huge difference between writing about the plot and giving away spoilers. I think people writing spoilers are a big issue but I think just as bad is when people say I don't want to give away the plot and then they hardly say anything about it so you don't really know what it's about.

Maybe specialist knowledge isn't right but a basic knowledge at least. I've never played with toy soldiers, I have no idea what you do with toy soldiers. I would have no idea if the review was useful or not.
But I see your point. Everyone should vote on if it's useful to them. If I wanted to buy toy soldiers for someone and read a review on dooyoo where the person stated that these toys soldiers were good then that would be useful to me because I would think that I should buy those ones.

I always say I don't want to give away the plot :D. I try not to mention much past the first 15 minutes of a film, or first couple of chapters of a book.

I did get bollocked off someone for mentioning something that occured in season 3 of a show, despite the fact we're nearly at the end of season 4. But that comes from using TV discussion sites, where anything that been shown on UK television is no longer classed as a spoiler. So I've had to adjust my thinking regarding TV shows when reviewing on Dooyoo.
Moving onto a better place...Ciao

Absolutely - I was merely cautioning that so often a plot turns into a spoiler if you're not careful. I've seen so many blow by blow accounts!

I read a comment on someones review of a series where they complained that someone had given away a spoiler for a season prior to the one they were reviewing and I thought that was quite odd.

yep, 10 days is about right. Dooyoo do check the reviews at the point of cash out and, due to illness etc over the recent weeks there may still be a bit of a backlog. I don't know though.

If you wait much longer than 10 days then email dooyoo or contact a guide and we'll do our best to see what the position is.
