Well i've just received my insurance renewal for my 5 year old Rottweiler and its increased from £300+ to £606 per year  apparently its because of my dogs age...for goodness sake she's 5 not 15. I was absolutely gobsmacked when i opened it..i've tried looking around for other insurers but she's had two cruciate ligament ops on her back legs a couple of years ago and hence if i change insurers anything that could be related to that surgery won't be covered...i'm in a catch 22 situation.
Note to Insurers ....why don't they start a NCB scheme like car insurance?????

I was with them. Sounds like what happened to me last year when my dog was five. She turned six in November. Insured her first when she was two for about £19 a month and by the time she was five it had gone up to almost £48 a month. Had two small claims for glass cuts and stitches. The excess rose from 0 to £75 a month. I am no longer with them. What part of the country are you in? Did you call them and ask why the premium is so high now? When were the operations?

I just checked the M&S website and put in my dog's details and they quoted £5 less a month than they did last year for the same cover. 15% discount on line. But it is only for new customers. So much for loyalty.

I'm in Suffolk ... Yes i rang them straight away and they said it was down to her age and the increase in vets fees. Her operations were in 2006 and 2007 in fairness both claims were settled without any issues but after that they changed underwriters and it increased by almost £150 (I was told it had nothing to do with the claims). As for the excess i distinctly remember paying extra at the start of the policy so as not to have to pay the excess, they now tell me that does not exist anymore and therefore i'll have to pay excess on any claims.

Re M&S, I also noticed that from the age of 9 pet owners have to pay not only the excess but 20% of the cost of treatment.

Because they are people who would put off taking the pet to a vet in order to keep the premium low. Any decent company wont charge you more for making a claim. M&S are well known for upping premiums
