they have a very odd definition of "life endangering" too - they refused to pay my dogs hospitalisation as it "wasnt a life threatening condition" - despite the fact that he was in on a drip, and died....

I still havent had a response to my questioning how much more life threatening his condition could have got....

My advice to you is to cancel this policy and take out one with a reputable insurer.

Have I bought a bad policy

If you ask about E&L on any dog/pet forum, you'll discover that they don't have the best reputation in the world. A friend of mine had a terrible time trying to reclaim any money from them.

It might be worth reviewing your policy and comparing it with the likes of pet plan or similar. Yes, a lot more expensive, but in my opinion better cover. It all depends what you need from an insurance policy.

Petplan don't say that. I've taken mutt down on Sunday's for things that aren't life threatening but which I didn't want to wait till Monday, and the insurance has paid up. The last time was when she had a foot operation, it got infected and she wouldn't leave it alone - I took her along because I was concerned that if I left it she'd have 3 legs and a stump by the next day. It may have got through because it counted as ongoing treatment from the op so the vet lumped it all in together, but I don't think so.

I second what elsien says. Idiot Dog gashed his foot on Easter Sunday a couple of years ago. It wasn't life threatening, but it was flippin' urgent! £80 out of hours consultation fee just to take him to the vets before anything else happened. General anaesthetic, stitches, meds and all follow-up appointments (less the excess) were paid promptly by PetPlan - no questions asked. :T

trudij They sound like absolute idiots! Surely the the fact that your poor dog died makes a complete nonsense of their standpoint. Can you report them to the insurance ombudsman? So sorry for your loss :(.

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

Thanks everyone, going to trawl through various providers tonight and make sure similar clauses do not apply. Pet Plan and Direct Line have been suggested in the playground this afternoon !

E and L are the WORSE insurers. If you havent had a claim or visited a vet with your pooch Id suggested you look at Axa pet insurance - the lifetime cover £7k EVERY year. Ive spent years trawling insurance policies for dogs :) Imho Id say Petplan lifetime is probably the best followed by Axa. Difference being the cost :) Dont have directline, its not a genuine lifetime policy (both its policies have a limit to the amount you can claim for a condition).

It was a few years ago now, and I dint know about the IO or I would have done - its more that they never gave me an explanation that annoyed me, Id love to know what they thought WAS life threatening!!!
Im in a similar (though shes not dead!) position with my horses current insurance company ( South Essex in case anyone is interested!) and that WILL go to the insurance ombudsman as soon as i get my "final" correspondance for the claim they are disputing - Im a lot more savvy these days!!!! :rotfl:

sorry for taking over your post OP !!
