Thanks refit. We have taken the standard tesco one and it says

If you have chosen a Tesco Pet Insurance Standard policy, we will provide your pet with necessary treatment for each illness, injury or disease up to a maximum of £2,500. Under the Standard policy, each condition will only be covered for the 12 months immediately following the first date of treatment.

I take it that if they develop a chronic condition after you have used the £2500 they then would not cover you even if you renew the policy. Am I right here.

Perhaps worse than that. It will be one year or £2500, whatever comes first. The fine print would tell you if this is £2500 for every condition, or £2500 worth of claims overall.

Personally I feel that this is too low a cover if your pet was to get a major condition that required either surgery, or a chronic condition, but of course one has to balance the cost and the benefit....

Yes marshall, you are right. They say they will cover you up to £2500 for the condition, once £2500 is gone you are on your own for that condition. If you spend £2k on the condition and it flares up 18 months later, you wont be covered, as they say its only for 12 months from the first date of treatment :(

Oh, sorry refit, we posted same time. But it does say there that EACH illness, injury or disease. So Id think that would be per condition then.

Thanks for that folks. say they have 2 conditions in one year (god forbid) but what then? Do they pay the £2500 for each one.

As hethmar pointed out, that seems to be the case.

    Quoting from your previous post:

'If you have chosen a Tesco Pet Insurance Standard policy, we will provide your pet with necessary treatment for each illness, injury or disease up to a maximum of £2,500. Under the Standard policy, each condition will only be covered for the 12 months immediately following the first date of treatment.'

Of course the cover will cease once you reach the limit, or the 12 months. A recurrence of the condition would not be then covered as well.

Thanks again refit, my dog has got corneal ulcers on both eyes and we had cancelled our insurance a couple of years ago as things were bad and money just too tight like lots on here and never really took any notice of it as we had never used it on either dog. It was only after the visit on bank holiday that we realised we needed it. (near on £200 just for two visits and a third to go which will be the biggy if its not better and maybe ongoing too!!). I know his condition now is not covered and he has to still go on monday again as they say that the large ulcer should have cleared by then and if not then they want to sedate and do more thorough tests. We are struggling now and god knows how we will pay this. I just want him right. Hes not unhappy but is squinting in the light so I have darkened the rooms and got the blinds done and only walked him at dusk last night. (on the lead!!). I just feel so sorry for him:sad:.
  • ok - having googled E&L I am now panicking!

Is there anywhere a list of 'good' insurers for life cover? (for both the dogs and the horse!)

Well, we have been discussing it on this thread for yonks now - not sure if that many do horses - possibly NFU?

Dogs - well, take your pick really as long as you get the for life version of a policy - Petplan, AXA, NFU, Marks and Spencers, Halifax, HSBC ...............check them all out for quotes and also which do horses.

Hi, not being picky but its NOT always cheaper than the vets bills.
In fact its usually not, thats how insurance companies make their money.
If it was cheaper than vets bills, they would be making a loss instead of a profit.

I'm also very reluctant to OVER insure, people only need to cover medical bills, some of the extras & ad ons on these policies are just frills & filling, you don't need death cover on your dog/cat? Its not like you are going to miss his wage?

Insurance for all sorts is thrown at us from every angle, if we insured for everything, we would have no money to eat!

Sorry not been on for a couple of days probably not going to be on this forum again!!
I was only trying to be helpful. In regards to what I said for me it has so far worked out as a lot less for my insurance I have had to claim twice for one of my westies to the sum of £300 and like I say my little girl has racked up £1000 in the last 3 years I have paid £562 into the insurance and had £1300 back. Yes I may never claim again but who knows what could happen tomorrow and I don't have that kind of money sat in my bank account!
I was merely stating that if your dog falls ill and racks up a bill of £300 one month your insurance of £20 is alot cheaper than the vet bill that month.

In regards to the death policy it is up to individuals but there are still costs attached to it when your animal dies with vet fees to pay etc.
Also on my insurance it does pay back the cost of the pet if this is what you were meaning. some people may want to replace there pet i don't see any harm.
But don't get me wrong I am only paying £30 a month £15 each so it isn't that much. i adore my two dogs and I would never have been able to afford the vets fees without my insurance so it was saving grace for me.

Sorry if I ranted but felt a bit put out i was only trying to help with my experience when i put the post up did not excpect the unwelcoming reply.

I can only talk about the horses.

Horse insurance is usually per year, I've never heard of "For Life" with horses

Good ie most vets will accept direct payment from them

NFU (Try and use their local offices, much better service than the call centre IMHO)
    AIMS
    KBIS
SEIB (but their phone staff aren't great)
    Petplan (V expensive IME)

OK - some vets won't accept direct payment

    Stoneways
    Shearwater

Avoid - like blood from a stone to get money out of!

    E&L
    Equestrian Direct
Anyone who is underwriiten by E&L.....there are quite a few, IIRC Equestrian Direct are?

There are other insurers but what you have to keep in mind is that all horse insurers appear to be getting a lot tougher about paying out - if you think you may have to make a claim it is now advisable to contact your insurer asap....NFU in particular are quibbling about claims (according to my vet!) much more than they used to.....
