I know Direct Line are currently offer 12 months for the price of 10 when taking out a new policy when you quote the reference 'Pet 12 for 10'.
We used comparebestdeals.com/insurance/compare-pet-insurance and found that Tesco cover vet bills of up to £4,000 and offered a 20% online discount and clubcard points. Other Insurers actually covered more vet bills - but in all my years of owning a pet it's never really exceeded £600, so I went for Tesco in the end last month.0 -

Its the length of time with Tesco that is the concern Ben - its not for life.0

Could someone tell me what the problem is with E&L? I've seen a couple of posts just saying they are bad while flicking through but no specific details as to why and when I search it comes up with nothing!
Both of my dogs and my horse are with them, through pet-insurance and horse-insurance respectively - their cover looked far better than any other insurers I saw so I'm worried now!0 -
Ive never heard a good word about them viking - only complaints. Its when you actually claim that the problems start apparently
Have a google, there may be some sites about them? Our friend is still waiting for payments for his dog's illness and the dog has been dead over a year now
Hmm,. seems there are quite a lot of hits and all bad Im afraid. If you havent made a claim or had to visit a vet with any of your animals, look for an alternative insurer now.

There are three types of policies:
1. Set amount per year (You could claim a set amount for a year, but pre existing conditions are not covered) Usually after a year, a chronic condition will not be covered.
This is good for an accident, but if your pet becomes diabetic (for example), after one year, no cover. Cheapest variety
2. Amount per condition: This will allow you to claim a set amount per condition over a period more than a year. But once the maximum amount is reached, no further cover. So again, in a chronic condition like arthritis, once you have reached the limit, further cover ceases. Middle ground
3. For life policy: In this it is a set amount, every year! So you could claim your maximum amount every year. Best for chronic conditions as the amount you claim replenishes every year. Best but most expensive
Hope this helps0 -
Thanks refit. We have taken the standard tesco one and it says
If you have chosen a Tesco Pet Insurance Standard policy, we will provide your pet with necessary treatment for each illness, injury or disease up to a maximum of £2,500. Under the Standard policy, each condition will only be covered for the 12 months immediately following the first date of treatment.
I take it that if they develop a chronic condition after you have used the £2500 they then would not cover you even if you renew the policy. Am I right here.0 -
My dog (aged 10) has recently had a bladder problem – blood in the urine. The Vet took samples and gave him antibiotics for a week, but after another sample it came back as still containing blood and bacteria. The dog was taken in for a scan and other tests, which came back inconclusive, so it was recommended that he should have all the same tests again, but with a cancer specialist, who took a biopsy. The biopsy was still inconclusive, but that vet gave us another course of antibiotics and some pain killer/anti inflammatory tablets. After that course of tablets another sample was taken, which came back clear. All of this has cost us £1,500 pounds and because our insurance is with E&L (they will only pay two thirds of the total bill), we had to pay, then make a claim. We’ve already received notification that this year’s policy has gone up from £14 to £18 per month. We’ve also received a letter from them saying that the dog will now only be covered for a year for anything to do with his bladder, after that its not covered. We haven’t received any money from them yet, but hopefully it won’t be too much longer. So, you really need to do your homework regarding pet insurance. Perhaps it would be better to put £30 in a savings account, which would have come to £3,600 over 10 years + interest – even £15 a month would have covered this bill.0
