my daughter has a part time job. she works to suppliment the lifestyle, moblie phone and transport fees to scotland to visit her BF.

a little stroke of luck......im over the moon,

from York to Glasgow on the train it costs £72 return. my daughter has rung me and told me she has just booked her ticket but by paying £25 the cost has come down to £42, and will do from now on. Why don't they tell you this to begin with, we could have saved money.

    anyway, things are looking up.

I dont think young persons railcards are a state secret, after all Nat west are currently advertising the fact that they are giving them away with student(uni)accounts
should also try:TheTrainLine: train times, book tickets, reserve seats for mainland UK trains, for even more savings

I'm amazed that you think it reasonable to pay for your daughter's train ticket to see her boyfriend but seem to begrudge paying her college expenses. What sort of message is this sending out to her?

we payed half of the train ticket. Also i want my daughter to have some kind of social life, rather than sitting at home watching Jeremy Kyle!!

Maybe they are hoping that she gets pregnant while she is there? ;) x

No, what you said originally is completely wrong, and very ignorant.

But I was only referring to what you said earlier in this very thread - so how can it be wrong?

Just to remind you what you said:

granted, but when we have to pay a further £35 per month bus fees too, it all mounts up, this is just to get your kids an education.

she might as well get pregnant, get income support and get a free house or flat.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Ok. Well I'm sorry you're struggling financially. I am too. I'm sorry you're just over the threshold for EMA for your DD, and that you are frustrated by this. Slagging off other people's lifestyles or ranting about scroungers tabloid stylee isn't going to help.

However, the good news is that you can save heaps on this website - if you didn't know about railcards, which are very widely publicised, the chances are the there are loads of other savings you could be getting! You can see from my sig what a difference I have managed to make this year through cash back etc. Good luck!

Just to remind you what you said:

'she might as well' does not mean 'im hoping'

and of course you know that the remark was said in frustration of how we feel about the subject in hand.

how many parents do you know that are hoping that there daughter will be knocked up at 16.

my daughter has a 15 hour job in a nationwide bakery, and im not sure because i havent asked her recently how much per hour she gets but i think its only £3-75, maybe someone can clarify this.

If you're daughter is under 18 and getting paid £3.75 an hour, she's actually getting paid more than the minimum wage for her age.

There are many young people who cannot claim EMA because of their parents income, that's just the way it is and unfortunately nothing is going to change that. Instead of arguing about why and making slanderous comments about issues affecting other people's lives (my Mother was an alcoholic and she most certainly did not get money to be one/feed her addiction).

Your income is far more than mine, thus I am sure you will be able to manage and support your daughter - yes you may have to tighten your belt and 'cut corners' but to be honest most of us do these days. Personally, I have never been able to afford Sky TV and at present I cannot go out *full stop*!

I appreciate that your daughter needs a social life, but this does not have to involve making regular trips to far away places - if she has a partner there then perhaps the odd trip is needed, but perhaps other things could be considered like meeting half way for a cheap day out, or longer & less frequent trips (or why her partner does not make the trip instead).

How far away is the educational establishment that she is going to? Perhaps there *may* be funding available from the college itself or from your local authority (Council). It is worth investigating as there are options sometimes. That is presuming that your daughter is going to said college because it is the nearest one available that offers the course she wants to study, and not because it's near her mates/boyfriends/just fancies going there.
    Debt: £5343.67 + secured loan (August 2008)
Target: Just learn to 'manage' at the moment!

Thanks for your comments, firstly I have not slagged anyone off, this was a disscussion and i have not commented on anyone personal status. Im sure there are people worse off than us, and im also sure there are people better off than us who know how to twist the sydtem to their benefit, i have actualay had a few personal messages on how to possible get EMA with our current circumstances, so if you know the system well im sure there are loopholes in it.

also im not arguing with anyone, if someone make a comment i try to answer and yes maybe my facts are not 100%, but im not an expert as others are.

as for my daughters traveling, she met a nice young guy who was from Scotland, just becasue he lives far away we still have to accept she likes him and would like to travel to see him, also its not really that expensive, if she met him half way there are other cost factors involved, as for this was she is safe in his family home and at least we know were she is on a night, with her staying for a few days.

my daughters college is 21 miles away, yes we have explored avenues to get her there through the local council, however, we cannot claim anything, so we have to pay £350 per year for her to travel on a school bus.

i try as a parent to let my daughter live her life and do as she wants as long she is respectable and abides by rules that we set.

discapline has been in the forefront of our family life thats why, none of us have ever been in trouble with the law, ive not as much as a parking ticket.

I set my rules to abide by the law and hope the law looks after us.

We are a desent family and pay our way, i have done since i was 13. ive worked in the health serive for some 20 years.

all i want is a little help now and again, will not beg or steel, but if kids are entitled to something then they should get it regardless.

why should my little one be blacklisted because we as a family work, and work damn hard!

How many parents do you know that would suggest such a thing, even as a flippant comment?

    Not even Fr*d did that!

As for the alcohol issue that is an urban myth I have read about before. They do not get extra money to spend on booze, they just get IB/IS as others who are ill/disabled do. Some even get DLA, though this is usually related to physical problems caused by the illness.
