EMA advise please

Options
is anyone an expert with the EMA system.

im getting conflicting views from the application form and an advisor i have spoken to over the phone.

in the brochure it says ' The ammount of EMA you will get depends on the ammount of income that came into your household in the tax year 2007-08'

ok, we as a family, that is 2 working adults brought home in the last tax year £29.000 that is net, gross worked out at £33,300

So according to the broucher we clearly bring home less than the £30,810 stated, however, talking to an advisor on the phone, they say they take into account the gross earnings and not the net. so we have now conflicting opinions with what the EMA broucher says and what an advisor says.

Can anyone help here please.

The £30,810 stated is before tax like most benefits. Nothing confusing

have you read what i have put. it says in the brouchure.....

in the brochure it says ' The ammount of EMA you will get depends on the ammount of income that came into your household in the tax year 2007-08'

income that COMES into your household, i would not say 'gross' earnings is coming into ones household.

Why would you think that it would be based on net income?

Everything else is based on gross income? CTC awards etc?

    No different with EMA.

A net income of £29k works out at a lot more than £33,300 by the way, how have you managed that? Are you SE?

Gemmzie is correct (and your reply is rather abrupt). You are choosing to read the text as 'take home pay' - it doesn't actually say that.

Sorry but that assumption is a bit silly.

Everything is based on gross earnings, for example, mortgage and loan applications use GROSS income details.

    Exactly the same with this

thats all i wanted to know thanks. but like i said i would not consider money that comes into your household includes all your deductions too.

like most families we are just over the threshold, waste of time working these days.

we even have to fork out £35 a month for school bus.

makes you want to pack your bags and move abroad. This country has gone to the dogs.

apploigies to Gemmzie, if i was abrupt.

When you go for a job interview advertising a salary of £25k per year and learn...

''Mrs Jones, we will pay you a salary of £18,937 per year''

''What do you mean, it said £25k in the job advert, why are you now only offering me £18,937;)

Your calculations are not correct anyway as you have more income than your £33,300 suggests.

    A few examples....

Example 1....1 person working earning a salary of £33,300 will receive £24,664.60 of this after deductions (£4,335.40 difference to your example)

Example 2....Split earnings down the middle, 1 person earning £17k (£13,417.60) and the other earning £16300 (£12,934.60) Total income from £33,300 joint = £26,352.20 (£2647.80 difference to your example)

    Example 3...1 higher earner, 1 lower earner, 1 person earning £25k (£18,937) 1 person earning £8300 (£7414.60) Total income from £33,300 joint = £26,351.60 (£2648.40 to your example)

But you earned £29,000 NET which equates to a single income of £40,000 Gross, or if both working £37,500.

That puts you way out of the EMA threshold of £30,810

How have you managed to keep £29k of a £33,300 income? Are you upto something a bit dodgy?

Anyway, even if you were only earning £29000 GROSS, it is only worth a measly £10 a week. Hardly something to get upset about:confused:

    1 additional point...

Please dont tell me you've been declaring NET income to CTC? If so you'll be in for a shock when a vast overpayment letter comes through your door

i may have misunderstood some people. i earn around £15,000 gross, im only a hospital porter. my wife earns slighly more than me as she is a healthcare assistant. together we earn just over £33.000 before tax and other deductions.

If you are both PAYE which i suspect you will be with your professions, your NET income will be lower than £29k. It will be around about £26,350 from employment. (as shown in my examples of take home pay above)

I suspect you were including CB and CTC to boost this upto £29k?

Anyway, it's irrelevant as like you said your gross is £33,300 and that is over the £30,810 threshold.

It is only £10 a week though so i wouldn't get too upset.
