  • A railcard is £24 for the year and saves a third - so on a £42 ticket she'd pay for it in 2 trips pretty much. No idea what this offer is that she has got....
  • It does sound like a railcard!

that maybe it without working the maths. Maybe it was an extra £24, and now rather than paying £72 she will only pay 40 odd quid from now on.

  • I'm still very excited by this £80 a week for wine offer - where do I sign up???

They're probably on long-term sick which would mean they get an extra
amount included in their benefit (Income Support - the disability
premium). If they are unable to work for a year they get this extra
amount, it is the incapacity for work which triggers the extra money.
It's not extra money paid solely because they're "registered" alcoholics.

ive had a quick search on the net about the drink issue and that is the info i have found.

but in effect this is correct.

my daughter has a part time job. she works to suppliment the lifestyle, moblie phone and transport fees to scotland to visit her BF.

a little stroke of luck......im over the moon,

from York to Glasgow on the train it costs £72 return. my daughter has rung me and told me she has just booked her ticket but by paying £25 the cost has come down to £42, and will do from now on. Why don't they tell you this to begin with, we could have saved money.

    anyway, things are looking up.

I'm amazed that you think it reasonable to pay for your daughter's train ticket to see her boyfriend but seem to begrudge paying her college expenses. What sort of message is this sending out to her?

No, what you said originally is completely wrong, and very ignorant.

They may receive the money because they are incapacitated, as does anybody who is medically incapable of work, not purely by virtue of being an alcoholic. The money is not specifically for the purpose of buying alcohol.

You have also quoted the wrong benefit. The Disability Premium on IS is actually only approx £25. It is more likely Incapacity Benefit that the person you spoke to was in receipt of, which is between £60 and £85 depending on the rate they are on.

Maybe you need to check your facts before spouting such rubbish? So far on this thread, you have not been able to back up any of your assertions.
    Gone ... or have I?

Sorry Silky, it is not correct.

They are getting extra benefit because they are unable to work, with alcoholism being treated as an illness. They are getting the same as anyone else with an illness, they are not getting money to spend on alcohol in the same way as a drug addict gets a prescription for methadone or similar. They can of course chosse to spend their money on drink - just as you or I can.
You can argue about alcoholism being an illness and being self inflicted or whatever if you like, then we can start a rant about illness caused by smoking or obesity or walking into the road without looking - but I'm very, very glad that I am not an alcoholic living on benefits and never ever would I envy that lifestyle or wish to swap with someone unlucky enough to be in that situation.

Maybe they are hoping that she gets pregnant while she is there? ;) x
