    Overtime, i work for the NHS i would work 7 days a week if over time wa son offer, sadly in our hosital we have a overtime ban so to speak.

    Is your daughter not capable of getting a Saturday job? If you can't do overtime at work, why not get a bar job? Even at minimum wage you could make up the money in less than 100 hours, which spread over a year is nothing.

    The alcoholics? :confused::confused::confused:

    my daughter has a PT job.

    the alcohol bit, i was talking to an alcoholic in hospital and i asked him about the cost, just like drug users who get free methadone alcoholics get extra income to help them. i think its instead of them robbing and breaking the law.

    You are talking absolute rubbish about alcoholics. They may receive sickness/ disability benefits in the same way that anybody else is entitled to them, but they do not receive extra money for alcohol.

    my daughter has a part time job. she works to suppliment the lifestyle, moblie phone and transport fees to scotland to visit her BF.

    a little stroke of luck......im over the moon,

    from York to Glasgow on the train it costs £72 return. my daughter has rung me and told me she has just booked her ticket but by paying £25 the cost has come down to £42, and will do from now on. Why don't they tell you this to begin with, we could have saved money.

    anyway, things are looking up.

  • mitchaa - I am one of the people you are talking about - I would not be better off on benefits - which is one of the reasons I work. I don't know anyone who doesn't work. I was once on benefits and my god it wasn't an easy option, it was hell and miserable and much more expensive to live from day to day than it is if you have a bit of leeway.

    The points you make have some truth to them, but really it is only the Daily Mail that thinks this is a widespread phenomena. The OP is talking about just missing the threshold - which is frustrating of course, but there has to be a threshold for means tested help - maybe we should be giving this help to all students - like child benefit is not means tested.
  • Did she get a railcard? This is widely publicised.

    I understand that every teenager wants to be able to afford luxuries such as CDs, make-up and days out. But surely part of growing up and gaining responsibility is to learn how to budget and manage funds? If your daughter has a Saturday job and earns enough to suppliment her lifestyle, use a mobile phone and pay £72 to visit her boyfriend, surely she can afford to juggle her expenditure a little and compensate for at least part of the £35 per month that it will cost her to commute to college?

    I agree - and what is she going to do when she starts work and someone earns more than her? It is all part of growing up.

    no we just take her to York buy a ticket and off she goes. I thought about a rail card, but isnt that a yearly thing. With teens these days friends seem to come and go if you know what i mean.

    she only travels to glasgow about once a month, so she can save her little bit of earned income for that and a few luxories (girls need these by all accounts) but this time the assistant told her if she payed £72 this time plus an extra £25, she can now travel for £42, which is great. however, it may not be because she might want to go to glasgow more often now!!
