Given my expereince with the Yakumo XL2 (expired after 9 months or so) I would not expect much from this or any cheap player but from a gadget point of view it is pretty irresistable. But does anyone know if it has a proper RESUME function, ie it will remember its place even after going to standby and, once powered on, will wait for you to resume? (The Yakumo gave you about 3 seconds before it re-started the disc.)

Strange, a DVD player should have no tuner?

But if is not portable with its own lcd screen, then it must be connected to a TV which ostensibly has a tuner.

No, not necessarily, you could connect it to an LCD monitor or something. I have an old 25" CRT monitor at home that looks exactly like a TV but in fact has no tuner, as it was designed to be used for instore marketing displays.

There is no legal reason for any store to get you to fill out a form when you buy a DVD player. However, if they won't sell you the player without you filling in the form, and won't be persuaded otherwise, I guess there's not much you can do. In my case, since I already have a TV licence, I don't have much to lose by filling it in accurately.

Even so, you don't need a TV licence if you don't use the TV to received broadcast TV.

Some friends of mine successfully managed to get TV Licensing to leave them alone, on the premise that they only used their TV to watch DVDs.

I spotted this one yesterday too, and at that price you can bet I'll be sat outside waiting for them to open.

I've read a few bad reviews though, but I'm thinking for £20 its got to be worth the gamble!

Will save me a stack of time not having to convert my Xvid movies to DVD first.

I bought a DivX/Xvid player for this reason the quality of the movie depends of course on the original source and encoder used. Having said that the recent DivX/Xvid files are superb.

I saw one bad review on VCDhelp could not make much sense of this thread. I'd appreeciate and pointers to reviews and how to make this multi region. There are box shots in ebay: The logo on the box says DivX Certified so it has an an official DivX codec for good compatibilty. It will also have an Open source XVid codec, so it should playback most files. I have several DivX/Xvid players and the ones with DivX offical support are nice as they play the more types of AVI codec.

<Off Topic on> I was after a wireless player as now I have lots of DVD rewriteables to burn watch and reuse, so the PC is STILL the bottleneck :)
Players like those from KISS have wireless access (via FTP) worth considering if you want to minimise time on the PC. I want one that supports WPA not just WEP for the wireless access.

    <Off Topic off>

Read this "The 8900P / 5100x have a internal USB port with external two memory slot readers. The 1.385201 from LG poland doesn't support this. However 1.385201 with memory card reader support is now available if your interested" here. Would it be possible to reconnect the jumpt from the USB port to a stock one and attach an external hard drive? There are photos here and I know its been mooted bust has anyone seen a flash file to enable this? If so it would be great I could attach a large USB HD :)

Looks like it may have been done, but I can't read german. If someone would be kind enought to email the author I'd appreciate it.
    Seth.

    Hi seth,

I had a look at all the info about the usb ext as i would want to implement this so can watch my 200Gb films on the go with no burning required ;)

Now from what i can tell is that these players should have all the hardware present and just requires a little mod of the pins and power to add a usb lead. that's all well and simple.

But now the hard part is that the guy on the forums br0max, said:

The firmware V4 is aimed to LG 8x51 players and those players don't have a karaoke, DVD-audio or USB features. So it's not possible to add these features to V4 and make a one-for-all firmware. The only way to get these features working is to add V4 features to a firmware that has support for a karaoke, USB etc. But it will take a lot of time to get familiar with new firmware and add V4 features it, because there is a lot of custom code that needs to be implemented to it.

So from this it sounds like no firmware currently exists that can achieve this for this model

the only way i see we can proceed is to translate the German on the site and the hopefully find the firmware he used to flash his player and give that a go, but with the risk of it being a incompatible firmware and thus potentially killing the unit.

    Just my 2p worth
