I've tried both ways Cuddles but personally I like the fatter mouths and I found the toe was better for me I wasn't fussed on the shape of the heel.Little Miss Chatterbox

Here is my version of the owl monkey. You see how different they look even though they are made with the same socks, so no two people will make on the same. I took a close up photo of the mouth to show how the angle of the photo makes the mouth look bigger than it actually is, and I think this is what confuses a lot of people when they want to make the very large mouths that they see.

I don't use the toe part for the top of the head I round it off so the head part is shorter and that makes them look really different too
I like the footie monkey Cuddles :T
I went to Peacocks today and it was total mayhem I hadn't realised that it was the 40% off event and I could get the discount so I stocked up !Little Miss Chatterbox

Hi everyone.
I've been lurking around for some time now and have decided to bite the bullet and try a sock monkey for my daughter. Trying to give everyone something homemade this Xmas!
Just a quick question, roughly how much stuffing do I need to buy, on ebay its sold by gram weight and I haven't a clue. Will try to get to a shop this week but I live in the middle of nowhere and think ebay , or a craft site mite be calling!
Thanks

I use about 200 -250 gsm to stuff a ladies sock, but I do stuff firmly.
I buy mine from Dunelm mills - it is £5.99 for a one kilo bag.
I have tried the stuff from ebay and it is very hit and miss as to whether it is lumpy or nice and soft.
I know some people on here also use the cushions from the £1 shop, or even pillows, but you must be careful if the monkeys are for a child because of flameability etc.
Good luck with your monkey making0 -
I get my stuffing aka cushions from Poundland and it says on the packaging that it conforms to Fire Regulations BS1425 and the Furniture & Furnishing Fire Safety Regulations 1988, so is perfectly safe for making toys.
I would be willing to buy and send you a cushion or two, at cost plus postage - it has got to be cheaper than £5.99!!! Two cushions alone would be £2, and postage has got to be no more than £2 as they are actually quite light.
PM me if you do and we can sort something out.0 -
Glad to know the poundland cushions are fire retardant, I am sure they work very well, but I would need more than one to stuff a monkey.
Don't be misled by the price of the stuffing from Dunelm. £5.99 may sound like a lot, but you do get a whole kilo of stuffing from which I get 5 monkeys (I do stuff mine a lot)
The best way to compare is to weigh the cushions and see how much you get0
