Hayley83, I love your sock monkeys and think they're great! I've also found that my finish improves after each one - have made 5 so far. I like the buttons you've used.

Hi deedledee, I'm hoping my sewing will improve the more monkeys I make. The only time I've sewed before making these was at school and we only had a few lessons so I'm quite proud I've been able to make these at all!
The buttons I used were from a scrapbooking pack from The Works, I will have to resort to telling my OH that his shirts no longer fit him so I can have the buttons off them soon :D

I think if I made the over the knee sock monkey again I would make the arms only half the length.

Craftylady, they're great, well done! I love your spike - how did you do the armband and did you do the lettering with a embroidery machine? I like the way you've sewn on the eyes, I never thought of doing it like that.

WHEN Maddie George was diagnosed with cancer at the age of just 23, her life was turned upside down.

But her housemate Holly Lambert was able to raise a smile - with the help of a pair of old socks. She turned them into a monkey sock puppet to distract Maddie from everything that was happening.

Now the pair are out to manufacture and sell hundreds of the monkeys with the aim of raising enough cash for a decent wig - and they need your old socks!

Maddie, who works in marketing and lives in Kiver Road, Archway, explained: "Holly made the first monkey when I got my diagnosis and it was a really sweet thing to do.

"Then when I found out about chemotherapy I discovered that the NHS wigs are absolutely appalling. Losing your hair is one of the most difficult things you have to comprehend - and if I had to wear one of those I would never leave the house. But real wigs are between £500 and £3,000, which is more than I could afford."

She added: "The first two weeks after the diagnosis I was really struggling. It was all just too much to take in. But I have had so much help and encouragement from friends I'm feeling much better now."

Holly, 22, an office manager at The Hub, in Torrens Street, Islington, said: "She came into my room and said, 'what's this lump in my neck?' The next day she rang and said 'I have cancer'. She is 23 - it is absolutely horrendous.

"She has to have quite a harsh form of chemotherapy. But she is coping with it a lot better than I could. She is getting through it by making jokes, laughing and carrying on as normal."

Half the money raised by selling the monkeys will go to buying a decent wig, the other half to the Lymphoma Association.

People can send socks to be transformed into monkeys to Holly Lambert, The Hub, Torrens Street, Islington. Monkeys can be bought from www.monkeysformaddie.com.
  • Hi all, I've decided to make one of these for my Mums birthday, found some useful instructions and seem some very experienced people on here so I'm hopeful i'll manage it. Could anyone suggest what type of stuffing is best, had a quick look on ebay but not to sure what i'm looking for (some of it seemed very exspensive)
    Thanks

  • Welcome giggles_alot... I used the filling of an old cheap pillow to stuff my sock monkeys. You can stuff many sock monkeys with one pillow and I find it gives a nice smooth finish. That's just my experience, other people may have other suggestions.
