First thought - yes definitely! I would return the first dress with full price receipt and keep the second dress - assuming both in resaleable condition.

Then I read the thread again... NOT if she'd spilled champagne on the first dress! That's beyond cheeky verging on theft / fraud?

Yes, I think she should. I have done exactly the same thing myself. It is so annoying to find an item you bought maybe only a day or so before has been reduced. So long as it is unworn I can't see a problem.
  • I'm not sure what the issue is, surely this is just common sense!

OF COURSE you would return the sale dress with the full price receipt!
The store can obviously afford a sale otherwise they wouldn't be having one and they will still be making on it, they just want rid of the stock! (might feel different if it was a closing down sale, i'm not heartless!)

Would the people who say it's wrong think the same if it was something they had bought for a lot more money? i think not!
  • To me, this week's Dilemma looks more straightforward than the ones I've seen here so far. Looks to me like straightforward theft/fraud if she does the swap for the refund (although she's not going to get caught.) Therefore the main 'dilemma'/question posed, of whether it's moral or not, looks obvious (ie dishonest therefore immoral).
It looks to me like the only real dilemma is her personal temptation of whether she gives in to the temptation or not.

I have a policy with debenhams which avoids this happening for £19.99 a year I can claim back any money I have overpaid on sale goods and I have 100 days to claim

They saw you coming, didn't they?!?:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

At least now you'll know better!
  • return it right now!!

get the money owed back to you!!!
  • It's not theft. It's not fraud. It's not dishonest. It is common sense, and the key is keep all receipts in a safe place in case they are needed in the future.
  • When I lived in the USA, it was entirely normal for stores to simply refund the difference if you present a receipt for a recently purchased item now in a sale, thus making for happy customers, and also saving the store a load of hassle, selling and accepting goods back again.

Just a few weeks ago, we bought a TV from a shop in the UK (I don't know if naming them contravenes the posting rules, so I'll just say they're known for "never being undersold"), When we commented on a later visit that the price was now lower, the staff immediately offered AND ORGANISED a refund - even without the receipt, just by checking their sales records!

So there are some honourable retailers out there!

(BTW, quite a few of your readers have misunderstood the question: of course no-one should take the WORN dress back!)
  • From peoples' comments, you can see that loads of people aren't reading the question, or else don't understand it. It's not as simple as it first looks....
  • I would have no hesitation in returning the dress as long as it hadn't been worn - if I had worn it I would speak to the shop manager and see if he/she was reasonable.
