I grew up on a dodgy estate and one of the scams I remember as a kid was quite similar to this, except you buy an item from shop A and then take it back to another shop for argument sake say shop B for a return, but here's the clever part you look in shop B's bins for the greater value reciept and buy said item for around £10-£20 less at shop A. Then take item back for a return to shop B for a full refund. This is very much the same and is easily done as people throw away receipt like it's a disease.

    You're joking! :rotfl: :rotfl:

If you have the receipt you WILL get the FULL amount back NOT the sale amount, as you have proof that the item was paid for at the full price. The only time they give you the sale price back is when you have no proof that you did not buy it at the sale price.

Yes, but the poster was referring to a GIFT. In that case, they wouldn't have the receipt!!!

The dress has been worn and soiled, are people not reading the OP? Returning it after that is disgusting and stupid. Infact, most retail staff would tell you to sling your hook if you tried to return something you ruined!

Um...actually she isn't returning the ORIGINAL dress! She's returning the NEW dress with the ORIGINAL receipt!!! Maybe you should read the OP!!! :rotfl:

Look at the queues in M & S as soon as a sale begins - everyone is getting cashback on previously bought goods. The stores probably rely on a certain amount of inertia, ie lots more people are too busy to bother, otherwise they would not allow 28 day 'cooling off' periods.

You are also back in the store to do your exchange so hopefully you will see some more stuff in the sale to spend your 'reefund' (and maybe a bit more) on.

    Everyone is a winner.

In my mind, the second quote well justifies ignoring the first.

This customer inertia , or whatever it's called in the trade, seems to be a valid tool as far as retailers are concerned.

It also ranks, in my view, alongside manufacturers using the customer as the quality control ?

Which, due to inertia and possible timescale issues, must save the manufacturer bucketloads compared with strict, in-house controls?

So, if the retailers, etc, can make use of the bending of ethics, why the outcry if a customer does likewise?

    go for it.....
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Yes I would defintely take the dress back and only pay the sale price. I have done this in the past. There is nothing more ANNOYING than having paid full price for something only for it to down in the sale.:rotfl:

Until last year when they stopped the policy in the UK AFAIK, Gap and Gapkids used to do the same as some posters have mentioned they do in the USA. You just used to have to show your receipt (not even the item) within 14 days and if it had gone down you could get a refund of the difference.

It used to be very useful in the January sales when they would put prices down again every few days...:o Shame they stopped it (at least they did in the Gap and Gapkids in town, and not due to little me BTW as I only claimed on a handful of items). They said it was a national change and there was a notice on the cash-desk about it.

Having read the thread again I can't believe those who think it's fraud to take the exact same new dress back with the original receipt just saying it's a 'duplicate present'. If a store has a 28 day no-quibble returns policy then of course most people would do this. The police would hardly arrest you for taking back an item with a receipt relating to that same item! :rotfl:

How on earth would any store prove it wasn't the first item unless they had marked the sale items. And if they did spot something that suggested it's a sale item you would just say 'oh silly me, as I said it's a duplicate present and I must have brought back the wrong one, sorry!'

Easy mistake to make if you ever have 2 of an item, are the 'holier than thou' brigade saying they wouldn't ever return a duplicate pressie just in case they picked up the 'wrong' one from the rail at home?!

Always worth asking first - I ordered a £40 pair of boots from a mail order catalogue once, and by the time they arrived they were in a sale leaflet at £20, so I asked for them to be charged to my account at the lower price and they were! :D

Many storecards have the option of taking out price protection in case items are reduced and I have also made use of that where I could - particularly when some £55 shoes I bought were reduced to £20!!
