I cant get a lodger as i have a dog, and not everyone likes dogs, plus i cant live with people hence why i moved out of the family home.

This is essentially asking the council to pay because you have a dog.

If you think about it logically, you're a single 22 year old and (as far as we know) you're healthy and able to work.

I was on £12,720 when I moved out and I was 21 at the time. Times got hard so I got a second job (and even a third for a few weeks!).

I don't understand why you're looking to claim benefits when most others would just get a second job to improve their income.

Apologies for this not being in line with the aim of the thread but just wondered why you think it's anyone else's responsibility to pay for your life's preferences (second room for all your stuff and having a dog!).

Have you had a look at the old style board, I know its not benefits but it may help stretch what you have a bit further? Also I realise you are on a low income - so any other options open to you - could you do something in the evening? How about looking into further education or something so that you can find a better job?

£13000 for a single person with no dependents is unlikely to be classed as a low income. Also, as someone has said, you won't be entitled to HB (now LHA for private rented) or CTB for a two bed house, as you are over-accommodated.

If you can't afford where you are living you need to look for something smaller, a one bedroom flat or studio apartment maybe?

Or get a flatmate if landlord will agree!

DMG - thanks for putting me right on LHA, it is really useful to know this as all my previous experience has been with the old HB.

OP, I am not going to post any more on this thread. Each time you are given advice you just come up with some spurious reason why you can't/won't take any notice of it. Frankly I think this thread is a wind-up.

Apologies if I am wrong, but you really are not helping yourself.

I really think you need to compromise, not everybody likes dogs is quite a lame excuse. Lots of people DO like dogs so this should not be a problem in taking a lodger.

You need a spare room to store your stuff. What about a clearout and have a carboot sale?

Have you thought about a 2nd job?

I too had got to the stage of wondering if this could be real:eek: . I am by no means a "benefits basher" but I do think that giving benefits in this situation would be taking it to extremes, and not at all putting the money where it is needed/meant to be.

Op - you are young, free and single - and can (as I did at your age) get a second job to top up your income. I believe you should also identify the problems you have with "living with other people" and get help to correct this before you are too old to change.

I know adults with kids trying to live on little more than you have - granted they would get benefits - but the costs are far higher as well. As to "stuff" in the 2nd bedroom - I only have two bedrooms - but the "stuff" in my second bedroom is my two boys - who could desperately do with their own space!

  • 'Some people not liking dogs' is a lame excuse for not having a flatmate.

My house in the UK is lived in by my son and two other young men. He has two cats. Whenever we advertise for another lodger we just put that they will be sharing with the cats as well as the people.

People who don't like cats don't apply! So anyone who does either likes cats or at least doesn't mind them.

Having a lodger/flatmate is a good way of making your income stretch further.

Between you, you will be able to afford the rent.

Well, FWIW, this looks like a wind up to me too.

However, OP, why not just apply and find out first hand?

They usually have a section for other information so you could say in there that you need 2 bedrooms for your 'stuff' and you can't share as you don't like living with people, and you have a dog.

I am sure they will consider these very real issues you have and offer you full housing benefit.
  • Just To Let You All Know This Is Not A Wind Up.

I Do Have A Second Job I Work Every Evening In The Week After My Full Time Job And Also At The Weekend, So Yes I Am Helping Myself And Not Just Trying To Claim Benefits.
If I Wanted A Lodger I Would Ask My Other Half To Move In But I Dont. Independence Is Important To Me And That Was The Whold Point In Moving Out.
Im Not Just Making Up Lame Excuses. If I Had The Time Id Get A 3rd Job But Unfortunately There Arnt Enough Hours In The Day,
