Cat food questions - merged

Hi
I have two cats and a dog, I feed them all dry food. i fill their bowls in the morning and it gets left all day, because it is dry anything that is left just gets left until it is gone....
I am very much of the opinion that no sane animal would starve itself, I also know that our cats fill up on mice and birds, as I have found enough decapited ones in the garden to back this up.... I definately would not pander to them and faff about changing foods etc
I also do it this way because the girl will not eat at the same time as the boy (I think he's a bit of a bully) So they are able to go eat whenever suits them.

Does anyone know where I could get a chart which shows WHEN pets have been fed?
I have three cats aged 12, one and five months.
I work days and my fella works nights, and when we compare notes it seems the little tinkers are bagging extra meals, often crying to me for food when I get up, an hour after my OH has fed them.
The older cat will eat in moderation, but the middle and younger cat will literally eat whatever is available until they are sick.
It's got to the point now where they will follow you every time you go into the kitchen, crying for food.
We give them a mix of supermarket tinned food and dried food; they are all very healthy and have bags of energy.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
unless a cat is ill it won't starve itself...i suspect they know you will keep up offering different foods are are now being fussy.
stick to one food and place it down for them to eat in the morning...lift it if they haven't eaten it after an hour, then at tea-time place more food down again...if they are hungry they will eat.
good luck!
I was going to say that...with all that choice they are getting snooty!!!
Give them one choice and that's it...if they are hungry they will eat it (am sure my Dad used to say that to me when I was a litle girl actually!!!):rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Sorry I don't know where you could buy one specially for feeding.....
If you have a calender on the wall could whoever fed the cats just mark it to show they've been fed?
Or do a days/weeks/month document on Word and print it off?0 -
LOL...sorry I can't help but it's so nice to know my cats aren't the only ones that do this!0

They have the whole routine down to a tee! pathetic kitten-like cries, rolling on the floors showing their 'empty' bellies, fighting over scraps of breakfast I drop, etc etc.
I've stopped feeding them now until I've spoke to my OH first, but it's not always practical - wake him up sleepy and he comes out with some nonsense.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
I leave dry food out all the time for my 4 cats. They did go a bit mad and gorge for a few days, but soon learn to "self-regulate"! One of them also has pouches morning and evening to keep his weight up, so I feed him on his own."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

Would you not be able to work out between you that OH maybe feeds them when he gets home, so that's their morning meal and you feed them before you go to bed, so that's their evening meal?
Or as orlao said, have a calendar and tick the date when they have been fed. If you get up in the morning and there is a tick on that date you know your OH has fed them already.
My hubby feeds our girls in the morning as he gets up before me so I know for sure not to do it again.....however much they beg

I'll give it a try. It can be difficult getting them all to feed together - sometimes the older ones want to snooze and the kitten is bouncing about.
I'm sure none of them will starve though.:rolleyes:DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
It's heartening to read of of your cats being fed - perhaps twice! There are so many cats out there who are neglected and go hungry. Our pampered pets are so lucky. I rescue cats and am saddened by the number who are left to find their own food. I have just taken in 2 small kittens, aged around 8 weeks, who were living outside, full of cat flu, and the owner said they could fend for themselves! I know what I'd like to do to her! :mad:Mad about cats - or maybe just mad! :rotfl:0
