I've been around for a week or so, so perhaps I should introduce myself. I am 46, have two children (5 and 8) and have been married for nearly 25 years. We both work full-time, and our eldest child is disabled, so time is always very tight. Money is not really tight, tbh, but it needs to be spent more wisely if we are ever going to be able to retire. I love cooking - most of my contributions here will be of the food kind - but I have got used to using a lot of expensive ingredients (HOW many kinds of rice do I have? TWO lots of saffron????) and would like a simpler life. If I can make it work, DH might be able to give up work, which he hates.
    Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600
    Overpayments to date: £3000
    June grocery challenge: 400/600
  • I've been looking at the site today and have picked up all kinds of hints and tips so far. I'm 28 years old and living with my fiance, trying to save money for a house and the main area I need to improve in is cutting down on my food spending.
  • This site is great although it's very slow on my stupid work computer. I don't have the net at home because BT want £150 to reconnect my phone line, which I can't afford, so I usually just come on while at work.

I'm 25, graduated 2 years ago and have been working as a trainee journalist. Have been working very hard to pay off my student overdraft (currently I owe £280) and not take on any credit cards or loans. Not easy when I rent a flat and don't earn much money. I've been really scrimping. I don't have an oven or a washing machine which is rubbish but I just manage rather than getting into debt.

I planned to pay off my overdraft by Christmas, then start a savings account and start saving for a deposit on a house.

But I was getting so miserable at work that it was affected my health, mentally and physically. I couldn't cope with it anymore. Handed my notice in and have a week left to go. It feels so good to take control of my own life.

Looking for a job at the moment. I don't want to get into loads of debt. Will be living very frugally until a job turns up. I'll be retraining to teach English to foreign students, and in February, will go to Poland for 4 months to teach in a school. It's all quite exciting. But I need this site more than ever, to scrimp and save before I go.
  • Hello,

I too have lurked for a while.

I'm 30, live with my bloke of nine years and i am due to return to university next week! So leave work on Friday to live on a bursary and part time job and this means that i need to learn how to be more frugal.

TBH I am already quite frugal and relatively careful with money (BOGOF, reduced stickers, lots of pulses and veggies). We are renovating our house and over the past three years we have spent a lot on that. And until two months ago we didn't have a full kitchen for two years- just sink, cooker and fridge (and these would often rotate from room to room!). So I have just rediscovered some of my old habits and I can now cook again which is wonderful.

My main problem is lack of organisation- i work random shifts, two different jobs and lots of overtime- so we often eat on the run. But with starting uni we will be in together more often so I plan to cook- cheaply, well and healthily!

I would also love to start making wines and chutneys. So I am hoping I will get my act together soon,

    Molly
Due to become a student next year, at 30, so need to learn how to live frugally and streeeetch out what I have.

    All help gratefully received!

I tend to lurk rather than post but thought it about time to say Hello!
I'm 57, work full time, married (2nd time) for 20 years, 2 grown-up kids who've left home and 2 grandchildren. Been down the debt/CCCS DMP route and cleared my debts but now OH is long-term sick and out of work and I WON'T go down that route again so time for some serious economies.
I thought I was frugal (OH says I'm tight) but boy have I learned a lot from you guys!!
I'm veggie, love cooking and have an allotment so hope to give a little back in return for all the tips I get from you all!

    Hi everyone.

I'm 35 and usually frequent the comping boards but have been lurking around the os for a bit, reading the posts and being inspired by you all - thanks.

    I have a little boy who's 2 in November and a hubby of 46.

I try to be as environmentally aware as possible and like to make good traditional home cooked food from fresh ingredients so your posts are invaluable and given me lots of recipe ideas and lots of laughs - thanks Mr Badexample!

I'll try and contribute a bit more in between my batch cooking & baking which I'm having a go at this weekend

Just wanted to say hello to everyone !

    Hello! :hello:

Well, I used to know who I was but having had a beautiful baby in the spring, then moved to (almost) the other end of the country in August, I seem to have lost my identity somewhere along the way!

Having worked for a couple of charities for thasl 7 yrs, I'm now getting used to on maternity leave (though can't afford to stay off for too long...)

I lurk a lot here in 'OS' and also 'green and ethical', occasionally posting, and have picked up some great tips, most of which I fail to stick to, but not to worry!
  • Hello!

I'm Vicky....I'm married with two gorgeous kiddies (4 and 7)....

I'm a WAHM....and value my time with my kiddies, so we do loads of fun stuff together when they're not at school - DD's fave activity being baking, which is great with me!

Like to keep busy....but I'm more of a live to work person than a work to live one, so I like to save pennies where I can....

    LOVING the MSOS thread! :D
    Is it payday yet?
