Great, I'll tell my sister about that. Nephew's favourite shop is "the pound shop!" because he gets a quid to spend on a toy. And if he is being a ratbag in town they threaten him with not going to the pound shop and he shapes up quickly! Nothing works so well as a little bribery with a temperamental 4-year-old, does it?

My 4 year old daughter loves going in too! On Sunday she chose a Squinkie bracelet and ring set like this and she is thrilled with it. They are like charm bracelets

I've just got 8 assorted fruit bushes and climbing roses. As soon as i've finished lunch i'm going out in the garden to plant them, they're sitting in a bucket of water at the moment.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

What you have to remember about poundshop plants is that they are really little more than cuttings. I find that buying them at the right time is the secret to having success with them. Get them too early and you can't plant them out but get them too late and they are less likely to still be alive.
But you cannot expect fully grown plants in the first year. In the first year they are putting out their roots and establishing themselves. Second year is better but it is really in their 3rd year that they are proper plants. Obviously this doesn't apply to everything but I have Lupins and Red Hot Pokers which are now in their third year and only now are they looking and growing like proper plants. I have a Physalis (Bleeding Heart) from Poundland which did very well in its second year.
This is why they are a pound! When you go to a garden centre you buy a plant which is likely to be at least a year old. If it is larger it is probably older and costs more. Time is money and by buying from Poundland you are providing the time and labour that you would otherwise have to pay for at a garden centre.
If you are planting fruit bushes by the way, don't expect fruit in its first year. Most fruit bushes put out their fruit on the previous years wood so you won't get anything 'til next year.
Personally I pot pound shop plants into pots to get them going and then plant them in the garden the following year.
Cheers,
Ian.
p.s. my Red Hot Pokers from Poundland have NO red on them at all! They are yellow hot pokers, lol.0 -

Funny you should say that - that's been exactly our experience with the distinctly over-hyped Thompson & Morgan. Used to be a thoroughly reliable Ipswich-based nursery selling quality plants, but the stuff we've had from them over recent years has been very poor indeed. Basically cuttings.
I have no problem at all with that at Poundland. It's a pound, and you can see what you're buying. T&M is a very different story!0 -
thank you regarding the plants, my other rose took within a few weeks but these 2 are doing nothing, they in pots outside. hopefully they will do something at somepointdue to spilling coffee :coffee: on my keyboard it works when it wants to :rotfl:

Thanks for the tips about nurturing new venus fly traps, I wooped when I found the last two in Argyle Street, Glasgow, and promptly lost them when I realised my old-fashioned pint jug, http://www.onlinebarsupplies.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/2/_/2.jpeg also from there, had split my bag wide open. One of the hazards of wearing headphones, you don't hear things go plop on the ground. Hope whoever found them enjoys them..will Poundland get more?
I've got a fourteen year-old niece and forty-something boyfriend who are both bugging me for them!).
Saw "Love Hearts" body lotion and body spray gift set which looks good, but I have enough smellies at the moment: http://www.cosmeticsfairy.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image/730x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/Z/R/ZRHK1VDPXKX.jpg
Also Bloomsberry & Co "Top Drawer" Cherry Chocolate biscuits (boxed), in Union Street. They sound very nice, haven't tried them yet. Edit: Ha, I spelt their name wrong. Found them: http://www.harveynichols.com/s303995-blooms-cherry-choc-biscuits.html on Harvey Nicks' website too...impressed...0
