It's worth a try. Alternatively, you could always put the clothes into the bath to soak with some liquid soap, rinse them a bit, then bung in the machine to spin.
This is what I do if I've run out. Make sure water is reasonably hot, use any cheap shampoo/bubble bath/showergel. Aggitate it (good exercise) leave it soak for an hour or so. Give it a quick wring, then put it in the washing machine for a good rinse and spin. It will be fine and will probably smell quite nice.0 -
Have just run out of laundry detergent & with my working hrs the next few days I'm not going to be able to get to the shops to buy more - I have 2 loads need doing. Are there any alternatives - I obv don't want to ruin the machine or end up with a kitchen full of suds!
I do have: vanish powder stuff you put in with the detergent; tiny amount of fabric conditioner liquid; borax (what is this used for?); soap of all types (liquid, bar, washing up liquid, shower gel etc) and a small bottle of travel wash - which I'll use on a couple of things if I get deperate but I really could do with machine washing not hand washing these 2 loads as it's mucky stuff from gardening & other stuff ...
do you reckon there's any chance of getting clothes clean with just vanish powder in the drawer?
Hi goggle - washing up liquid and shower gel/bubble bath all work well. I normally just put a decent squirt/glug in the drum and away you go. Never had a kitchen full of suds yet!

washing my clothes? I totally forgot to buy my usual laundry powder/liquid this week and have a huge pile of urgent laundry to do. I really don't want to go shopping today, especially not just for one item, so I just wondered if anybody had used their washing up liquid for their clothes? Will it do any harm to my washing machine or my clothes? Or can anyone recommend any other liquid I could use that I might have lying around the house/bathroom0

When on holiday I have been known to rinse my underwear out in the sink, with a little bit of shampoo. They always seem ok to wear, but have never put shampoo in the washing machine.
I did once put washing up liquid in the dishwasher (just to see if you really needed to use those pesky expensive Proper tablets.) You need proper tablets, There were bubbles everywhere, and it took ages to get rid of them.
Actually I just realised that this is not much help really, sure some one will be along soon with some better advice,

Dont put it in the washing machine, as the other poster says, the constant agitation of the machine will create too much foam and it will be ages before you can get rid of it.
Guess youre off to the shops then !!!!make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
i would just wash without anything, how dirty are your clothes after all, and there will more than likely be abit of build up of powder in your pipes.
i'm sure i read on here about someone using showergel to wash there clothes.DEC GC £463.67/£450

i'd handwash the essentials with washing up liquid/shampoo/bath foam etc and leave everything else until you have been to shops!
there is a recipe somewhere on here for "washing gloop" that may help.:)LIVE SIMPLY * GIVE MORE * EXPECT LESS * BE THANKFUL0 -
Thanks for all the advice and ideas so far.
The good news is that I have managed to do one washing load with a tiny bit of washing up liquid...... the bad news is it produced more foam than usual, so I had to rinse the clothes again. The clothes have come out fine and are clean.
I am running another load of clothes at the momenet with no liquid at all.... as someone mentioned above...... I am sure you can do this, as there is a probably a build up of liquid in the machine....
I will run another load using some shower gel I found at the back of the bathroom cupboard that I had started to use and had forotten about . I figure it is soap after all.... what harm can it do...... it can't produce as much foam as washing up liquid can it?
Failing all this I have found a bag of soda crytals which I use to clean out my dishwasher every so often....... I will try washing my whites with that alone......my poor washing machine
Can you tell I am desperate not to go to the shops on such a lovely day??:rotfl: I won't have time to make laundry gloop today.... but I must learn how to make some!0
