  • Hi all, talking of washing by hand there(which I would do too and just spin the clothes) if I were to run out of w powder. It reminds me of seeing an ad. in a magazine last night. It was in the Woman's Own magazine, and it is called www.carbolicsoap.com and it is selling the old vim sunlight soap bicarb and bluebag and washboard and lifebouy soap etc, just like I remember my Granny using and my Mum too. I think it will appeal to a lot of people, so i am going to look it up later myself.

  • I have always used shampoo when on holiday and needing to rinse a few things through by hand.

Liquid soap works too, and shower gel or bubble bath but NOT in the washing machine!!

As you will have to handwash anyway, normal soap can work, rub it on any bad marks, otherwise just rub some into the wet clothes and then rinse through as normal.

    Hi Limelight,

There was a recent thread with some useful suggestions on how to manage without washing powder so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

I use a teaspoon and a half of Stardrops and it works fine on our denims.
I did try 2 table spoons but it foamed up quite alarmingly, i have not tried it on normal clothes yet but have some cleaning cloths and teatowels in on a 40 with stardrops and seems ok so far, Might brave it and do one of dp's socks and undies loads just to see

I have been using it for 3 weeks now, its brill.

I tried a dummy run with no clothes or anything and that foamed up a lot, actually coming out the machine but with clothes in the drum 1-2 table spoons is ideal. I did build up from 1 teaspoon just to see how that would do and its ok.

I now use it for all my laundry including whites.

Free Recipe - How To Make

    - Low Allergy Laundry Powder -Measure by volume, not by weight,
    • one part - Bi Carbonate Soda,
    • one part - Washing Soda (the powder form - not the crystal form)
    • and
    • one part - pure Soap Flakes, (either Lux, grated Sunlight soap, or your grated home made soap).
These three ingredients mixed together will get your clothes clean, without the chemicals that are destroying our environment and harming many people at the same time.
sorry to be thick but I dont know what you mean by washing soda, if it is not the same as soda crystals. Please could you explain

    Thanks

I'm amazed Sunlight Soap makes an appearance!
I have a couple of bars of this from when I worked for Lever Bros in Port Sunlight - never seen it since! Does anywhere sell this? I've been guarding my few bars viciously!

To the tune of 'While Shepherds Watched'.

While shepherds washed their flocks by night
    all seated round the tub
a bar of sunlight soap came down
and gave them all a scrub

I'd use a nailbrush and soap on all the stains, then chuck it all in without any soap and just wash in water. Otherwise you could grate a small handful of soap to throw in the washing machine. If you have shampoo or washing up liquid a squirt of that should do - it's all the same really anyway.

janb5, washing soda and soda crystals are the same thing, a chemical called sodium carbonate. Oddly both are made and marketed by the same company, but one is just more 'powdery' than they other and they can be used interchangeably.
