Washing in plain water is surprisingly effective. There were these products being touted a few years ago - some sort of ionizing balls you could put in your wash that would supposedly work as well as detergent. Someone (Snopes?) did a test of them and discovered that they worked exactly as well as plain water without detergent and remarked that most people who thought the laundry balls worked simply didn't realize that water alone does such a good job.
I only use half the detergent recommended since I read that. And, if I'm washing something like bed sheets, I just wash in very hot water to kill mites and germs, but sometimes no detergent at all. (I think to wash without detergent every time would eventually lead to dingy sheets.):beer:0 -
Afternoon everyone.I'm just back from holiday and have loads of washing and no soap powder. It's lashing down outside, shops are a long walk and I don't drive.

Hi MollyMop,
There was a very recent thread on this that should help so I'll have a look for it and add your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

Hello Mollymop
I would not risk it. Washing machine detergents are all "low foam". A handwash liquid will create too much foam which may pop the door seal on the machine :-(0 -
thanks for linking my post.I'm going to try a teaspoon of stardrops and tit from there.:)lost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013

I worked at a laundrette once upon a time, and the owner was adamant that you should use no more than half of the amount of washing powder recommended on the packet. I did experiments, and found that for most of my washing needs (i.e. I work in an office, my clothes are never really that dirty) water without any powder was perfectly ok.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
