You can use washing up liquid, shampoo, etc in a washing machine. One way to do so without using too much is to find all the stains and squirt a little on each, give them a rub and then throw the whole load in the washing machine. Be careful I have found that some washing up liquid will take the dye out of some clothes, doesn't happen often but I did have it happen onceLindsayO

Just to update everyone.I used a teaspoon of stardrops on my denim load and they came out great.I expected them to come out like cardboard but they didn't.I then used a teaspoon to do my whites and once again they came out really well.My DD has been running around the caravan in white ankle socks this week and they came out sparkling.I'm really happy and I'm also seriously considering using stardrops all the time as it would work out so much cheaper.I don't see why it would damage my machine but if anyone knows anything different I'd love to hear.Thankslost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013

I don't think it would damage your machine, as long as you don't use too many of them - if you used too many, they might create too many soap suds, in which case you'd see the machine leak.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I just thought I would add to this thread about 'soap nuts', if you google them there are lots of suppliers. they are natural seed things you put in your machine with the washing, a bit like holllow conkers, u use 4 nuts 6 times or so, they bring the washing up beautifully even with natural softeners. they cost less than a couple of pence a load and when they are done you can pop them in the composter. very ethical, and a bag lasts me for monthsI can choose happiness whenever I wish no matter what my circumstances

Too much soap creating too much foam in a washer is problematic but I'm sold on a drop of Stardrops for cleaning many things. I buy three bottles at a go and top up a plastic milk container full which saves on the cupboard space. I use the plastic balls also and while that is noisier I'm very pleased with the results. Thanks for your update. No longer half of Optimisticpair

ive used some fairy/ washing up liquid recently and it does the job, but dont put to much in lol
Ive stopped buying big brand wash powder, and instead bought a big box of smart price powder and some of asdas own fabric conditioner and i think they smell alot nicer saving me £6 a month lol.
asda smart price small box is about 50p or large is £1 fabric the softner was ASDA Concentrate - ylang and jasmin for 80p and it smells gorgeous.
just wanted to tell you as ive not bothered buying daz or bold for ages now and im saving the pennies and my clothes smeel fab
For whites i used daz but after watching how clean is your house i use the powder and put a bit of bleach in the softner compartment.
It gets them all lovely and white and to get the smell away i put on a rinse cycle with the softner and hay presto all my whites or lovely and white without having to pay for crappy products that dont work properlyTrying to make big cut backs!!!

just run the machine without any soap, you'll be amazed at how clean the clothes are with just water0

Have just run out of laundry detergent & with my working hrs the next few days I'm not going to be able to get to the shops to buy more - I have 2 loads need doing. Are there any alternatives - I obv don't want to ruin the machine or end up with a kitchen full of suds!
I do have: vanish powder stuff you put in with the detergent; tiny amount of fabric conditioner liquid; borax (what is this used for?); soap of all types (liquid, bar, washing up liquid, shower gel etc) and a small bottle of travel wash - which I'll use on a couple of things if I get deperate but I really could do with machine washing not hand washing these 2 loads as it's mucky stuff from gardening & other stuff ...
do you reckon there's any chance of getting clothes clean with just vanish powder in the drawer?0 -
It's worth a try. Alternatively, you could always put the clothes into the bath to soak with some liquid soap, rinse them a bit, then bung in the machine to spin.0

I found a recipe for powdered laundry detergent and printed it off - sorry can't remember who posted it.
You need:
1 cup of grated soap (any kind, I think most people use the cheap stuff from supermarket)
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup Borax
Mix together then use 1 tablespoon for a light load, and 2 for heavily soiled clothes.
Don't know if this works as haven't tried it yet - still using up bought washing powder!
