Earlier in the thread someone mentioned that using a BT Chargecard means the calls end up on your BT bill though beware the call charges on a chargecard are ridiculously high so it may be cheaper to not use that loophole.

Unfortunately, BT company representative has comprehensively closed the door on the BT Calling Card (Chargecard) loophole and there does not now appear to be any workable 'workaround' for those using a CPS calls provider which has changed to BT Wholesale's WCLI offering (which includes, Talk Talk, Sky Talk, AOL and Orange).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks. I didn't sign the part of the orange agreement which included calls so might be able to argue that point.

Thanks again............. or I can pay an extra £6.80 a month to BT.

Signing is normally irrelevant using the service signifies your consent to their terms.

hello, sorry i find this all confusing
    im with bt line rental
    aol for calls
and use 1899 for 08 numbers and mobiles
so is there no point me using 1899 any more as it just gets charged to aol?
ive probably read it all wrong lol
    thanks
  • What about calling 100 and asking for an operator assisted call? I think there is a small charge for this. Operators are BT regardless of who bills you. Try it, if you're on Talk Talk or something just dial 100 and when they say Operator Service, ask if they're BT. You can ask them to connect a call for you. Just give them the number. It's perfectly acceptable to do.
  • It is with deep regret that I can confirm what "Heinz" has posted above about the Chargcard workaround. I'm with AOL for calls and for the last few quarters have been making the minimum 6 chargeable calls through BT using a Chargecard. No problems - free caller display

Just received this months bill and been charged for Caller Display. Rang and cancelled it from my account. Operative at call centre said calls have to now be made from the landline number and not to it. He advised to use the 1280 prefix. But that solution was withdrawn long ago.

I await those with more knowledge to find another workaround. But won't hold my breath. Free calls from AOL still beats going back to BT. So will have to live without Caller Display. Think I'll survive.

    Thanks but what is "WSC"?

So far in this thread we've had WAC, WCA, WLR and now WSC

I work for a telecomunications provider in their Line Rental dept, and can hopefully shed some light on the abreviations shown above, essentially WAC = Wholesale Access Calls, WCA = Wholesale Calls Access and WSC = Wholesale Calls are all different abreviations meaning the same thing, the correct term is WCLI = Wholesale Calls Line Associated. as for WLR, this means Wholesale Line Rental, this is where BT, Openreach rent out lines to other providers like Talk Talk and sky, to sell on the line rental to their customers. I hope this helps.

Is it definite then that keeping line rental with BT and having calls from someone else via CPS be it Sky, Primus or anyone else will still allow you to use 1280 to route via BT?

If BT's statement only applies to people who have moved their line rental it is extremely misleading.

It is NOT true that if you keep your line rental with BT and have calls with another provider that uses WCLI (see previous post) that you will be able to use 1280, the definitiv eanswer is that if your CPS provider uses WCLI you should not be able to use 1280, and incidentily neither will you be able to use BT CALL BARRING.
