Guess you may have to rethink your 6 steps.

I have had no reply from Primus.

But as of last weekend I know it still routes through BT as I get a charge request ringback.

If suppliers do go down the WCA route, then I would guess the net effect will be that a number of their customers will switch back to BT, in order to retain the freedom to use other calls providers, such as 18185. If enough people walk, this should prompt them to reconsider, and hopefully restore customer choice. My problem is that my calls package is tied in with my broadband, so if I cancel the calls, I also lose my broadband and will have to change provider.

I wonder if Ofcom would have anything to say on the matter?

It appears WCA provides the same 'default routing' of all calls via the third party calls provider as CPS does except that subscribers CANNOT override it and 'hop back onto BT' using the 1280 prefix (and, presumably, cannot use other prefixes - like 18185 - either).

BWAH! - I guess quite a few of us are now awaiting more news on this

I was thinking the same thing, I guess they will have to way up profits from increased call charges against possible loss of customers.

Were there pigs going overhead when you wrote that :)

    What about TalkTalk?
I don't have line rental or broadband with them. Just CPS:(

I've had the same setup for several years: line rental with BT, calls with TalkTalk via CPS (Talk UK Weekend with no monthly fee, previously Talk 1) and other providers using appropriate prefixes.

Calls made in the last few weeks using the 1280 prefix have not appeared on my BT bill or my BT.com recent calls list. Fortunately BT did not charge me for caller ID or 1571 for the quarter ending mid-July even though my bill only shows 1 call through them.

I got the letter from BT today and I've just signed up online to transfer all my calls back to the Unlimited Weekend plan. Beware that the letter and website heavily promote the free Evening & Weekend plan with a 12 month auto-renewable contract tie-in.

I just got the letter from BT today - Many of us are on primus for free evening & w/e and using 18185 etc for peak calls. I use the odd 1280 override for 0845 and to keep free caller display with BT .The BT site isn't very helpful. I'd be grateful for any clarification .

I have received a reply from Primus to my email. It reads:
    Thank you for your email.

We can assure that we currently have no intention of making any such changes to our CPS service. If we were to make any such changes to the service, then we would inform you prior to doing so.

    Best regards

BTW, provided you keep them under an hour, you could also make free weekend UK 01/02/03 calls on BT (i.e. with the 1280 prefix) and, being 'inclusive' calls, they would also count as qualifying calls for free Caller Display.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

This could bring more customers to Primus if they do not change over.

I wonder if BT will be changing over to the new system and not allowing CPS to 1899 etc.

    Just a thought.
