You could leave TV and broadband with Sky, but have your calls with Primus on Primus Saver 2 and add on Penny Mobile.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Guys I also got the letter (even tho I got activated on primus saver 4 days ago).

I am going to publish a copy of the letter here as it is very concerning, I cant do it until I install the drivers for my printer/scanner tho. So will type out what it says.

"We are writing to let you know that if you still get your line rental from BT you may have recently received notification from them explaining that you would no longer be able to access their 1280 service. This doesnt affect your sky talk service. But it means if you dial 1280 before a call, the call will now appear on your sky talk together with your other sky talk charges."

It then goes on to try and woo me on to their line rental.

The way I interpret that letter is they trying to mislead me into thinking that BT have revoked 1280 on their own service but sky still allow it except they will bill it instead, but they make it look like a BT decision rather than their own. I did inform ofcom at the time I last posted in this thread but have still had no response at all from them, I now plan to send them a scanned copy of this letter as well.

If you're on Sky Talk Freetime CPS, just move to another CPS calls provider which does allow 1280!

The HERE link in my signature below may help.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

HP1: Heinz's suggestions are the best if you want a simple way out. If you are paying BT for one of their "calling plans", and if you feel like playing hardball, then

    (a) write to, or email, Sky on the lines:

I am paying you for calls I prefixed with 1280 only under protest. My contract with BT Retail requires BT Retail to carry calls that I prefix with 1280 (and the clause in their purported latest terms and conditions which pretends otherwise is manifestly unfair, and therefore void).

As I understand it, Sky has slammed me onto a BT Wholesale product called "wholesale calls line independent" which stops 1280 from working as my contract with BT Retail requires. I demand a refund for the calls you have improperly billed me for, by 17 October 2008. If BT Retail has, in effect, subcontracted these calls to you, then you must look to BT Retail for payment.

If I have not received a full refund by 17 October 2008, I will issue a summons in the County Court claiming damages on the grounds that Sky, by slamming me onto WCLI, has induced a breach in the contract between me and BT Retail.

    (b) write to, or email, BT HQ on the lines I suggest in the thread entititled talktalk blocking access to 1280:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1195505
Incidentally, that thread title is not quite accurate. It's not (simply) talktalk blocking access. It appears to be a conspiracy, possibly even a criminal conspiracy, between BT Wholesale, BT Retail, and other providers such as Sky and talktalk, to prevent consumers from accessing anything other than "all or nothing" telephony packages, and to drive indirect access providers such as Finarea (18185 etc) out of town.

Thanks so much for this advise! I unfortunately popped a letter in the mail to Sky Customer service this morning, after discovering my Sky bill was 50pounds higher than expected. (I am from South Africa and call home often). Instead of being charged the BT rate of 3p per minute I was charged by Sky 57p per minute! I called them over the week-end and had no joy so posted off a letter. If I do not get the response I requested I will send a letter along these lines and see if I get any joy!

I think it is disgusting that this can be done "for you without your consent" and also I received a letter today that was dated 7 October informing me of the change to 1280 access but Sky began billing me on the 1 September!!!

    I am soooo mad!!!

Is Sky blocking 18185 or just 1280?

I too got a letter from Sky yesterday about 1280 but a quick test has shown that 18185 is also blocked. I just called Primus and set up a Primus Saver2 account as they confirmed that they don't block 1280, 18185, etc. and have no intention of doing so. OK, that's what they say now but at least it'll be better than Sky. The sales guy also said that they are running a "find a friend" deal where I get 20 quid added to my account for every new customer I refer.

So, for those who currently have their line rental with BT but who use Sky Talk (or any other CPS calls provider for that matter) and also use one of the prefix providers (1899 and/or 18185 and/or 18866), the advice must be to TURN (and leave) THE TARIFF ANNOUNCEMENT ON.

At least then you'll know when your CPS calls provider has prevented you from routing your calls as you want - and you can then consider your options.
