  • Hi abbykid, again....http://www.blind.org.uk/newsletter1.html
I know this radio is dearer than you really wanted to pay, but did you know, you might be able to arrange for your father-in-law to get one free...By speaking to the Organization/ local authority, in your father-in-laws area that is responsible for services/ aids for blind people.

John Lewis sell one Jlewis £99 though.
  • Just so you know, SKY doesn't let you have all the free channels if you aren't paying for SKY, all the BBC ones and ITV, but not the channel four ones which drives me crazy, but I can't recieve normal digital TV in my area.

If by "Boom Box" you mean something like the Ministry of Sound MOSRC023 - Portable Boombox - With CD & DAB Radio, £60, it does not have an alarm and I very much doubt that you will get an alarm on a portable.

However M of S also do a Cube Micro System with DAB, FM, MW, CD/MP3 player, 2 speakers plus sub woofer, and remote, for £95 which includes delivery. Great sound but comes in one colour only, white.

If you check out the spec you will find no mention of an "alarm", nor is it mentioned in the User manual. However it has the next best thing, a "Daily Timer" feature which will switch the set on and off at preset times of day, so with the volume suitably set it should be capable of waking you up. However, unlike a full featured "alarm" system, there is no Snooze button, or gentle fade-in of volume. There is also a sleep timer function.

The sound is really pretty good although we have never pushed it to the volume limit - no need - and it has had mainly good reviews on Amazon. Particular praise for the clarity of DAB.

When it launched (c 2004) it was closer to £300 so it is in my view a steal at £95, providing of course that you like white.
MOS cd player and DAB radio is on http://shop.directelectronics.co.uk/ for £72 with free postage to most places

I saw it recently on an inflight magazine. Can't recall the price, but keep looking because they exist.
  • Delay ...

Although we have a freeview box we're not big television viewerse and mostly use it to listen to the radio. We get excellent reception on all stations (including MW Radio 5) on a very basic box (£40 at Argos). HOWEVER we are real 'radio people' and often have the same program on all over the house ... and when you do this you realise that there is a delay to digital radio, so it lags behind 'normal' radio. It's the same with my Mum's DAB stand-alone radio and when we listen on the Internet. Sounds really wierd on Saturday morning when I'm doing the housework and trying to listen to the same show in every room, and in two rooms the digital broadcast is lagging a bit behind (about 30 seconds)
Apparently they are trying to sort this out, and it's not a big deal, but it's a bit bizarre. (Of course to be proper money savers we should not run up our electricity bill in such an extravagant way)
I noticed too that if we watch (for example) a football match on digital TV and try to listen to the commentry on Radio 5, the analog radio is slightly ahead of the digital TV picture.

Yes a new wind up DAB radio was launced in October 2005 - the Devo Freeplay. Was considering getting this ourselves as really liked the idea, but after having looked into it we have changed our minds as it seems little more than a gimmick.

A 1 minute wind will give 3 minutes of DAB radio. So if you want to listed for 30 mins you have to wind for 10!!! Of course it takes batteries as well but you may as well just buy a normal DAB radio icon7.gif
