Oh no TDQ, a staplers not going to do much damage, try a sharpened pencil.

Hello to all the newbies and Micheal how long did it take to read the thread from the beginging, you have too much time on your hands.

And Osirreo I've done ECDL a few years ago tho, but I think in the end it was worth it, seen as now I have a job sitting at a computer with enough time most days to post on here and check some of the cashback sites, so go for it.

    Hello All,

I just wanted to have a moan about my situation to people that will appreciate where I'm coming from, and this seems like just the place! Am 29 now and have only ever been financially single. Had really poorly-paid jobs for years and accumulated about £12k of debt. Then bought my first flat 2 years ago and the debt has more than doubled since due to paying for everything myself rather than being able to halve costs with a partner. The mortgage was 100% and interest only and due to my large debts - now £27k not including £7k student loan - I am unable to change it to a repayment mortgage. I have calculated that it will take me 4 years to clear off the £27k and 5 years for the student loan, so that's an anticipated debt-free date of some time in 2014! In the meantime I will have to keep my mortgage as interest only, so even in 5 years time I will still have absolutely no equity in my flat (unless house prices start rising again!). Absolutely no-one knows how bad my situation is - some friends know I am "in debt" but have no clue about the massive scale of it all. My boyfriend of 4 months is also in the dark and my parents think my only debt is my student loan. I am just about able to make the minimum payments on everything and not starve to death in the process, but the whole thing is really depressing and I have cut costs in every area possible - even getting the bus to work for £40 a month instead of the tube at £140 per month which adds an hour and a half to my daily commute which makes me feel even more depressed - but still it'll take me 4-5 years to clear. I am convinced that I would not be in anything like this amount of debt if I had been lucky enough to find someone to settle down with early on. To make matters worse I am the only one in my family that has not lived with a partner for at least 3 years and I get really bitter watching them all spend money on doing their houses up and going on nice holidays, when I am living off of bread and cereal and barely making ends meet. I tell you - being single is HARD!

Sorry to have such a long grumble but I feel like venting and I am too ashamed to speak about this to people I know.

    Thanks for listening (reading)!

    Red.

    Hi In the Red

I sympathise with what you are saying, it can be hard financially when you are single, I should know

The only thing I would say is try to look at the positives, you have your own flat, quite an achievment. And you don't have to answer to anybody

I have seen a few of my friends, over the years, stay in relationships because they are financially tied - and it has only brought misery

Keep posting, somebody on here will always make you laugh, sometimes make you cry :rotfl: but always have a kind word of support and motivation:j

    Hello All,

Red- I agree with Shoegal and the others, from what you have said it seems like you live in London? If that is right and you own your own flat then that is amazing! I would love to have my own place rather than renting but it is all so expensive.

It can be tough being on your own and can certainly work out more expensive. However being in a relationship doesn't guarantee being debt free (as many of those on here can attest!) you could have been in a relationship with someone who was really spendthrifty and been in worse situation, maybe someone with an addiction or similar. There are often people posting where they are in a relationship with someone who hasn't had their LBM so is still spending at old rate when they need to cut back to avoid getting into worse debt.

You know 2014 isn't a terrible dfd - it will fly by - and there are tons of tips and things on here to help you to move the dfd closer.

You said for a long time you had a poorly paid job, is there any chance of changing jobs for something better paid. Maybe switching industries for more cash? I did that earlier this year, I was working in the arts and now I work in the public sector - better security and more money. I know now isn't really the time to be looking for something else but maybe worth thinking about so that when things pick up (which they will, and believe me, house prices in London will rise again - you won't have lost equity in your flat!) you are in a psoition to move. Of course this mightn't be right for you or something you want to pursue.

    Take care!
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

And feed my interiors addiction ;)

Evening guys & welcome to newbies,

cant help agreeing with eco about reading the whole thread  :rotfl:

as regards debt & being single ; some of mine was the result of paying off a previous partners debts that he'd kindly run up in my name  , although admittedly a fair proportion was also due to over- shopping :o .

I am much happier being in control of my own finances - I know exactly what comes in & what needs to go out & am not going to be swayed by x boxes or unnecessary car parts ;) . Not being able to share with family is tough though :( the rest of mine are all fairly affluent in comparison which can be tough but i manage to conceal the debts as they know that my income is low & my employment options are limited at the moment.

One day it will all be over & at least here we know we are not alone :D

Things are slightly calmer than yesterday! I had to clean my flat as there are people walking around it today...

    How are you?
