abbey really are dreadful. when this claim first started in may 2007, and when all the breakdowns of charges etc were received, there was two years worth missing, and we still havent received them despite god-knows how many requests. they havent even acknowledged that they will be sending them!!! they really are toads.xxxx
Thats an insult to toads, I`d rather trust my finances with a Toad than with Abbey...
Butr anyway, good luck with it, hope you manage to get back what is rightfully yours, but trying to get anything outta their grubby mits an massive task. Its probably because they can`t read in the first instance and therefore just throw away the letters or take a best guess, afterall they originally set my girlfriends business account up in MR. Samantha.......I laughed...and checked of course.... good luck X0 -

I think for the first time I am going to come out and explain to you that I have tried on numerous occasions since the beginning of July to find out their process. I have used their customer services email, I have used their CEO email and I have used their Media relations email and have received nothing from Abbey. I specifically asked for the information so that if a question on Abbey came up I could help you and them by advising the correct paperwork to send to them etc,.etc,
To be honest, I have no idea how Abbey work or what paperwork you should send them because they will not tell me. To be honest, send them everything but where you send them and how you find out info, I haven't a clue. I have to agree with your sentiments on what you think of them.
EDIT: Nationwide, RBS Group, HSBC have told me, awaiting on Lloyds and Barclays at the minute.0 -
I recently filled in all the Income and Expediture forms to back up my Financial Hardship claim with Abbey. I am a single mum who has been out of work since January and had initially claimed £1290 from Abbey before the test case scenario began.
They have written to me today to say they're sending me a cheque for £687. Now I don't know what to do. They've said that if i have any problems with this offer to contact the Financial Ombudsman Service. I would really have liked more - even to up it to £900 would have been ok for me, but I don't know what to do now! Do I take the £687 and then contact the Ombudsman for some more?
Any help/ideas/advice please???
Thanks...

Are you claiming enough benefit?

I have rent arrears. I just spoke to a guy on the phone at Halifax and told him I knew hundreds of people have already received financial hardship payments and he said that is only in exceptional circumstances such as family bereavement or serious illness.0 -
My boyfriends back account was closed a couple of years ago now as he had stopped using the account while it still had an unpaid overdraft and monthly charges and fees being added. He was in severe hardship at the time and was really struggling. After attempting to speak to the bank manager many times it was suggested to him he upgrade his account to 'imporove his credit rating' to a premium account with a monthly charge of around £10.No charges were ever refunded althoug it was clear he was struggling. The credit card account with the bank was also in arrears.
Eventually the bank passed the debts onto a debt collection agency who have been collecting a monthly fee from him ever since. To help him pay the debts of sooner I ahve recently paid off the debts owed to the agency and they are now in my name on an interest free credit card, which he is now repaying at around 70% faster than he was to the agency.
I am trying to now encourage him to fight for the old charges to be refunded. However I wonder if he would still be considered in hardship as a lot of his debt is now in my nabe. Even though he was in hardship at the time the account was closed??
Also is it possible to make claims for bank and credit card charges if the accounts are no longer active.
I appreciate any help and suggestions.
Thanks.0 -
Hi everyone.
A couple of years ago I made a claim with the small claims court for bank charges applied to a current account with HSBC. Since making this claim my financial situation has changed and I believe that I now meet the 'financial hardship' criteria. However, since I made the claim with the courts (which is at the moment on hold) the bank have applied a LOT more charges to the account.I have a couple of queries:
How do I now go about making my claim under financial hardship and is there away of claiming for ALL of the my charges and not just the pervious ones?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.0 -

Even though he was in hardship at the time the account was closed?? Unless he has prority debt arrears, which it doesn't sound like he has, it's unlikely he'll meet the FH criteria. But he can still claim

Hi everyone, some assitance with my case would be gratefully appreciated, as i do not really understand what they are saying to me..
Update for my ongoing case with the abbey.. claimed £2600 with interest, claim stayed in court at the time the first stay was put in place... heard nothing untill i lost my job 2 months ago and applied for hardship...
My case has been on hold in the courts from since they were all blocked and stayed. recently 2 months ago i lost my job due to redundancy. I sent off the financial harship forms from the site for them to look at it again, got the usual letter after 4 week that there was a waiting list and they would like another 4 weeks...
Today i received a letter from abbey telling me that and i quote "we appreciate your current financial situation and that, in particular you currently have rent arrears. in this instance we have arranged to refund you £500.00 of the charges. we have arranged for this payment to be made direct to you to assist you with your current rent arrears"
it then goes on to say i can contact the below advice and debt services below. then lists the usual CA national debt help line etc etc..
then and i quote " i hope you feel we've reached an appropriate outcome regarding your financial difficulties claim.
i have enclosed a leaflet for the FOS and if you are not happy with my investigation or decision. you should contact them within 6 months of the date of the letter enclosing a copy of it. as they would need this for there investigation.
Your complaint about the level, fairness and lawfulness of bank charges reamins on hold pending the outcome of the test case. we will keep you updated on the proceedings of this case with the OFT"
Can someone tell me if this is the end of what they are prepared to do with my case? the total of my claim was £2600 with interest. Do i need to contact them and tell them i accept this as part payment or can i write back and say this is not enough as the amount claimed for is alot higher?
if anyone can tell me what to do next i would be very gratefull
thanks Steven0 -
How much are your priority debt arrears (rent, utilities, council tax). If they are more than £500, you could phone them and try to negociate a higher figure.
You will not get £2600. What most people don't realise is that even under Financial Hardship waiver, banks do not have to refund anything0 -
bookabbi, because you paid it off, doesnt mean the debt wasnt in his name. it means there is now a different debt, on your card, which as far as they are concerned, isnt his, its yours.
on his debtthat was with the dca, you can still claim back the charges on his one, but you will have to claim it with the bank/credit card that it was with before the dca took it over.
go for it. and good luck. because the debt is paid off as far as they are concerned, he will get, all being well, a cheque for the amount. if the debt was ongoing, it would most prob be paid off of the account.0
