Thanks - will have a read of that site
Here I go again on my own....
  • Has anyone tried MAKING their own nappies? I'm looking into this at the moment as we're sort of squirming even at the cost of £200+ for an initial outlay (I think we're aiming for an MSE poster baby here!). As I've just given up my job to become fully self-employed (not UNemployed as MIL suggested - grr!), we have to be a bit more MSE about life.

Am definately working ahead on this (still have 7 months to go!), but this way I can find out about what babies are all about (!!) as well as what nappies are all about..then have time to make the 40 odd nappies in a leisurely manner. That's the plan. I suspect it'll end up with me going into labour screeching about how I hadn't got around to making ANY and what the heck are nappies anyway.. =o)

never tried myself (bit challenged in the creative sense!)

Flat terries are very good in the early days if you're on a budget
  • Hi bookmarked this thread ages ago and have just come back to it after reaching my 12th week of pregnancy.
I have already bought 7 motherease one size nappies off Ebay and am looking for some advice from other users - how many nappies would be a sensible amount to have (baby will be BF and will be born in Sept, but should have a proper clothes drying pulley in house by then)?
How many wraps in each size do I need?
My first son I had in disposables, he was born 6'11" so asuming no.2 is similar I may use disposables for first few months as most guides seem to say Motherease is too bulky under 8lb.
Thanks a lot for any inputs!

Me debt free thanks to MSE :T

Could someone please explain reusable nappies to me?
I have tried the internet and keep getting confused, especially as lots of links they provide are not working. Does anyone have any good websites that explain these mysterious items?

I suppose I can learn about them in person in parenting classes or whatever, but I want to get a head start for some reason, in case bargains on Ebay escape me!

Are they worth the effort anyway? I told SIL I was considering them, for the environment and she looked at me like I was crazy and told me to get rid of my car instead and get pampers! Helpful.

Only thing I can think of is toweling or cloth nappies. These are normally square and you fold them into triangles or one may be able to buy them already in triangles. In my 'day' I basically only used towelling nappies as disposables had just come in in South Africa and were extremely expensive. We mothers had what was called a 'steri nappi' bucket in which one put the soiled nappies in a mixture of nappy cleaning solution overnight. The next morning the nappies were put in the washing machine and then tumbled dried. While it is a bit of a nuisance especially if baby has gastro etc, the costs you will save should be quiet a bit, besides doing your bit for the environment, in which case leave out the tumble drying and hang them on the line as in the 'old' days!

    they are very helpful.
  • Hi

There are lots of websites which will explain it. https://www.thenappylady.co.uk or https://www.kittykins.co.uk are 2 which come to mind. There's also a link on the Old Style board to one of Martin's articles on re-usable nappies.

We use them on our LO and have done since she was 10 days old (she's now just over 1). We love them and wouldn't use disposables now. Once you get your head round it's it's really simple and easy to do.

We use a 2 part system - a cloth nappy (absorbant bit) with a wrap (waterproof bit) over the top. Your other option is and "all in one" which is the absorbant bit with a built in waterproof bit over the top. Everyone has different preferences. Used ones go in a bucket with a mesh in, then they just go straight into the washing machine (mesh and all) on 60 degrees. Tumble dry or line dry depending on the weather and away you go

Not sure where you are but most councils run Nappachino's where you can go and look at real nappies or there will be an agent in your area who can come and demostrate - I know https://www.babykind.co.uk run agents so their website may be worth a look.

As for people looking at you like you're mad - if you use cloth, you need to get used to that! Some people can't see the point but I just point to the cost saving and the environmental impact, plus the fact that they don't put an ingredients list on a packet of pampers and who know's what you're putting next to your babies bum and that usually shuts them up.

I may also add, that they're incredibly cute!!!

Oh my word! Times have moved on!!! :o

Where are the days when hubby was taking the poop off the nappies and soaking while I was busy with supper....

But then, it was good family time spent together and money saved because he wasn't in the pubs lifting the elbow while I was left to do everything! It was real team work! ;)
